I wish that one was closer. Almost exactly what I have been looking for. Something a little odd with the door/fender alignment on the passenger side pic though.

I did not think the "hockey stick" door handles showed up until 1978.

Positive on that for Firebirds.

Hmm.

Well, if this is right, looks like the LT trim got ripped off.

I don't like the way they break if you pull too close to the upper mount of the armrest.

Hello GD! Hope all is well.

Hope the heat is bearable out there wherever you are at.
We are in El Paso. It is hot as he'll but at least it is not humid like where my wife is from, down in southern Louisiana... lol.

Please educate me on what you mean by "hockey puck" handles please.

I looked at the link but I do not understand what you mean.

Be well and stay safe out there.

Best wishes to you and all of your loved ones always!

Well, I meant to say hockey stick ...

:)

Look at the bottom left pic on the link for the 78 - 81 standard panel. The armrest has an angled thin part that goes upward and mounts to the door with a single screw.

The inside of that pull is plastic that will break and now you have a flopping pull handle.

My experience has been that door pull straps, like in the Squares for upper trims and the 77 and prior Firebirds are the better route.

It's been high 90s to 100 the past couple of weeks. On the plus side, the humidity is lower - 39 percent today, under 50 percent during the day in general during the higher temps.

Set the thermostat any lower than 77 and the ac runs all afternoon to keep it there.

Anything cooler than that with air temps in the high 90s is a pipe dream in this house.

Plus is that if you keep it warm you avoid the shock of going in to the heat and vice versa.

Downside is you will sweat if you do much more than lay on the couch during the day.

BUT-

I ain't freezing with no electricity or heat like a few years back here.

That sucked.

Got you! I see them now.
Thank you for the quick education on the door pulls. I agree with you. I think i have seen that before. Also like those pull straps on the 80's Squares.

Be well and stay safe.
Best wishes to you and all of your loved ones always!

That large "hockey stick" pull/armrest actually appeared in 74. I've had 2 Type LT's recently that had those style. My 74 Z28 isn't a Type LT & the interior us very similar to my 72. The 80 has those large pulls & it's not difficult to yank them from the door. I actually welded a plate over the hole & drilled a new, smaller hole in the 80 because the metal was so stretched.

The door pull mounting is only half of the problem, imho. When the top pulls out, you'd think that's a good sign to either fix it, or pull very gingerly towards the bottom, where the rest of the armrest is still firmly mounted. But nope, people evidently just insist on tugging away at the flimsy part of the door pull and then it breaks off completely.

The plastic anchor broke out of the upper portion. I probably could get creative with a flat washer & use it, but the OE GM unit is better than the...Chin...Asi....Far East unit.
