    were factory frames galvanized?

Self explanatory title. :) I know chevy has used hot dipped galvanized frames at some point but I don't know if it's newer trucks or when they started or etc. Curious about both the 73-87 and 88-99 chassis separately if anyone knows, one might be and the other not too.

3/4 vs 1 ton differences & upping GAWR?

Just to followup realizing there were a few things I missed before... That Suburban bodied C60 is cool as hell and I might very well consider that. :D Though a 1 ton range is more what i'm looking for. 1/2 ton suburbans are more common than 3/4 ton ones, I figure if i'm considering a frame...

    6.2 conversion

I didn't read all the other posts (just responding to original post, and more for future readers since it sounds like it was done already) but from researching 6.2's for a past abandoned project the biggest thing i'd be concerned about is the Sudden Death Syndrome they seem to have that other...

    6.2 tweeks

I had often thought that propane/methanol type injection could be the cheapest route to boosted power on these motors, after having read of literal homebrew setups giving pretty substantial power boosts (30% more torque!) on other engines - biggest problems being EGT's (the numbers were on...

    6.2 ran gass through??

AFAIK it's possible (according to a military friend) to run gasoline through them in emergencies if you add a quart of motor oil or something to lubricate the injection pump. If it still runs bad perhaps it was damaged. It's possible just replacing the injection pump will fix the problem...

    12v cummins tranny options

Though not asked, just for completeness - Automatic options are stick with a dodge and go 47RH (strongest hydraulic-only) or 48RE (a little stronger but requires electronics), the 47RE I see no benefit for (requires electronics but no stronger), or the 727 torqueflite which is no stronger than...

    Cummins Coversion wiring/computer questions

You might find it easier to look for a 47RH transmission instead - the strength should be identical, just 100% hydraulic so no wires to mess with. Thats what i'd considered doing for a potential cummins swap before deciding i'd rather go nv4500 manual. Alternately there's that megasquirt...

    Dana 44 n 60 ??

I cant comment on axle strength of the 44 front but there are numerically lower ratios than 4.56 as well which might be a better match for 35's too. Maybe 4.10's? The cheapness of 14 bolt axles almost makes me say just find another 14 bolt with a more suitable ratio instead of downgrading to a...

Rockwell 2 1/2 ton axles anyone?

No personal experience, but pirate4x4 is the place to talk about this kind of stuff as it's sorta beyond the normal range of swaps. :) I've been told they are available for only a few hundred dollars - the $1600 for two sounds expensive... supposed to be extremely good availability, all...

10/12 bolt pass car R&P in truck housing?

Is it possible to put passenger car ring'n'pinions into the truck housing (even if it's with shims or something) or is the passenger car 12 bolt a completely different animal? EDIT: Expanded to include 10 bolts... are there any of the 10 bolt passenger car ring'n'pinions that will work in the...

a modern column shift for a 5 speed??

Didn't read the rest of the first post I guess. :) But answering gives me an excuse to bump it. So I can have a center console full of ham radio gear without shifters being in the way. I don't want to be forced to use an automatic for just that reason if I can help it though.

    Coefficient of drag??

Well the Ford Lightning F150's apparently had a 0.38 which is better than alot of the early 1980's cars. Mods can be taken notably further but i'm still curious what i'd be starting with vs a later pickup. The newer ones always get better highway mileage but some of that is less frontal area...

Tire size limits WITHOUT lifting? (flares ok)

Trying to maximize highway MPG by staying as low as possible, keeping the weight as low as possible for center of gravity issues. If there were some kind of adjustable or easily removeable lift I could alter up and down depending what set of tires I was running that'd be ideal. Even if it...

building for different types of offroading

Sort of planning all three (though maybe ARB air lockers or some kind of manual locker like Ox), was just curious about suspension options once you start considering something more. :) Used to be 33 inch tires and lockers would take you anywhere, then people started changing the definition of...

3/4 vs 1 ton differences & upping GAWR?

Tire, suspension, and axle upgrades are all planned anyways. I'm just curious at what point I should be concerned or/and interested in either frame or frame-to-body attachment points. (since I think that's all there's left to upgrade? :P) And i'm wondering what would be different about them...

building for different types of offroading

Because the main offroading i've ever done so far was going places I needed to for work (so you guys go out and get stuck?? for FUN??? :) ) and trying not to get stuck, I don't have much knowledge that's probably common to everyone else in this board. :) My biggest interest at the moment is...

3/4 vs 1 ton differences & upping GAWR?

I'm sorry if i'm just full of questions but it's more a concern about the payload/behind the rear seat load than the tow rating... maybe this is "I don't know" territory but i'm just seeing if anyone's ever considered it (or has intelligent guesses at where to upgrade) before. Thinking out...

Tire size limits WITHOUT lifting? (flares ok)

Assume alot of cutting. :) I'm just curious what gets in the way once you run out of fender to hack off! However 35's sound pretty good sized and I dont think i'd honestly need to go much above there... I wanted to have the ability to run at least 33's and possibly a max of 36" or so under...

a modern column shift for a 5 speed??

This is probably not that feasible but I thought i'd throw it out there... Is there any way to hook up an old style column shifter to work some more modern manual transmission like an nv4500 or even nv5600? I'm guessing they aren't made for it at all i'm just curious if anyone has ever...

Tire size limits WITHOUT lifting? (flares ok)

What are the biggest tires I could put on a 3/4 ton chassis, even if it means some modifications to the inner or outer fenders and possibly some steering scrub at the extremes? NOT only "off road" tires either, is as curious about larger diameter on road tires closer to medium duty size...

mods for LONG LIFE (ie a rustfree chassis for decades??)

Huh... thanks for that suggestion, I too was affected by decades of reading magazines, but i'm still confused a little... if there's binding occuring by polyurethane being stiff wouldn't it also be happening with delrin, delalum, and nyliner? It would solve the problem of not degrading if I...

3/4 vs 1 ton differences & upping GAWR?

What are the differences between heavy duty 3/4 tons and the 1 ton pickups? And is there any reason you can't just swap parts over to up the cargo capacity for instance? Like if I stuck 1 ton parts under a 3/4 ton suburban could I haul even more weight in the back? I had thought I read the...

    88-91 Suburban welcome here? Differences?

Really? I was sure i'd seen references to them elsewhere... :-/ Only that they were rare but that they did exist with full 1 ton running gear.

    3208 cat engine

That's probably in a semi. 6mpg would be pretty good for a semi especially of the age the 3208 came in, 4.5 would be pretty average. In a pickup with low gearing i'd expect low to mid 20's. I think the 3208 is a bit big personally, it's not that far past a cummins (which can weigh closer to...

    Should I swap to a 6.2?

Maybe! (note I didn't read anyone else's comments in this thread yet so what I say may be redundant) From everything i've obsessively researched myself, 6.2's and 6.5's have a tendency to spontaneously DIE sending the crankshift south through the block. It is semi irrelevant to mileage -...
