Sad Discovery: GM 10 Bolt Fails

Honestly don't remember it all. Don't believe that valve was in that truck and it was only a year and a half old when I grabbed it. I do remember the shoes were larger in diameter but a fair bit narrower with the replacement axel. A lot more grab than it was meant to have leaving the factory...

Sad Discovery: GM 10 Bolt Fails

I remember having crazy rear brake lock up issues with an '85 2500 after swapping out it's blown rear axel back in the late 80's. Imagine you could have a similar problem and may need to play with your proportioning valve a bit. Good luck and nice to see you will have it rolling again.

Problematic Starting - rotate crank before starter engages?

Sounds like the starter is engaging but the bendix is slipping. Have you tried another starter?

    Is this bad? Turbo question

It is just my opinion. I do not make my living in the auto industry so am not up to speed with all the small details of their installations. I have been working with/on diesels off-highway though for over 30 years. With regards to the charge air side, it is the direction of air flow. If the...

    Is this bad? Turbo question

The charge air side is feeding the engine. Checking it, is more relevant as far as turbo seals during inspection. He mentioned "run away". Have never heard of an oil leak causing that on a 4 stroke, but the old 2 stroke diesel was a different animal. As long as their blower was functioning, it...

    Is this bad? Turbo question

Can't say I have seen that before. I would be more concerned with the charge air side if seals were a problem. Is the engine loaded (lugged) often at lower rpm's where the turbo doesn't get a chance to really spool up?

    Black soot feom exhaust pipes

My parents had the same issue on their garage floor when I was a little snot. It wasn't soot though....

8.1 Vortec VS 383 Stroker VS 6.0 Iron LS

Guys/gals that need one for pulling their heavy toys? The body is rotting off my '08 Duramax, but I'll never let it go due to it's power and mpg with 9000 lbs behind it on our hills. The square is just for off road adventuring.

    Belt squeal (while accelerating)/alternator question

In addition to heat, location of noise and volt gauge movement was also mentioned while the squealing was happening? May want to unplug the clutch for the compressor if you haven't already. Noticed it wasn't in your photos. Glad to hear you have it figured.

    Belt squeal (while accelerating)/alternator question

When you say you have tried different pulleys, were they used? Take a look at the depth your belt is sitting at on all the pulleys. It looks to me like the belt is sitting too deep in the one for your alternator. The running surfaces should be straight and the belt should be sitting at or at...

    Belt squeal (while accelerating)/alternator question

The heat indicates it is the location of the squeal. A commonly overlooked problem is with the pulley itself. They wear out. The belt should be supported by the sides and not sit deep in the pulley. Have also seen where someone had installed too narrow of a belt at one time and parts stores keep...

    Trailering your square body

Nice! Going to bump up the tire size a bit with mine and it has a 300hp 5.7 in it that doesn't mind spinning a bit faster.

All these squares on trailers in one spot, is going to make us look bad to those other guys.

    Trailering your square body

Have hauled my K30 twice in the past couple weeks on a tandem trailer. It was under power loading both trips. Engine forward. You can take a quick measurement of the hitch height unloaded and loaded to give yourself an idea of what your tongue weight is.

K30 8 stud (lug) Wheel PCD & alternative wheels

If buying new rims anyways, you may want to look at going larger than the 16". It will open up more options for tyres since you are looking at them down the road anyways.

1987 SBC 350 TBI long block build question

If you can dry fit (without gasket) the pan and it contacts the block without stud interference, I would not worry about it. The holes in the pan's windage tray are likely there for that reason. Not all pan designs have them. The trays on those are mounted separately on the studs.

1987 SBC 350 TBI long block build question

Some applications (like marine) use a separate windage tray for their oil pans. For those, it fastens to those studs. Not sure if they will fit with your pan. You will have to check it's clearance with a dry fit.

    TH400 Temp Sensor Location

Makes sense @Ricko1966. The serpentine set up on my truck does have a clutch fan on it. Will be interesting to see what the trans fluid temp returns at from the 4 core rad up here in the north. It's a big reason for me wanting to monitor it before adding anything additional. Seems like the norm...

    TH400 Temp Sensor Location

Thanks @dragstews! Looks like a nice set up you have there. I am thinking that monitoring the trans operating temp is more important for me than what the outlet temp is at this time. It is currently only plumbed to the new 4 core radiator for cooling. Hoping that knowing where it is now while...

    TH400 Temp Sensor Location

Have the truck mobile again after sitting since 2005. The last fluid to replace in it, is the transmission. Wanted to wait until after all was circulated good and the new radiator installed. It sounds like the consensus for best location for a transmission temp sensor is in the side of sump pan...

diagnosing mystery rattle/ flex plate clearance

I just went through this a couple months ago with a '97 Vortec in front of a T400 in my '86 CUCV. It was relatively fresh in my head. I went with a 168 tooth TCI (HD) flexplate and ARP mounting screws.

diagnosing mystery rattle/ flex plate clearance

Someone will chime in and correct me if I am wrong here, but it is my understanding that it is your starter that dictates which tooth count you go with. The diameters are the same with both, which effects the clearance you are concerned with. If the starter has a staggered bolt pattern you want...

diagnosing mystery rattle/ flex plate clearance

Does the gap change with the engine barred over in different positions? That could indicate there is a runout problem with the crankshaft. I don't believe the overall diameter of the flexplates really changed if that is your concern. There was differences with them, with 1 and 2 piece rear seal...

diagnosing mystery rattle/ flex plate clearance

If you know the flexplate is warped, questioning clearance to t/c or anything else, would be moot for me. What ignition system does it have? I ask because some will adjust timing to try to smoothen out the idle. For those, you could lock them in base timing mode to eliminate it from contributing...

Wiper washer motor replacement. Who you buying from?

I got lucky finding an '84 model (w/ built in pump) at one of our local mom and pop shops a couple weeks ago. Sorry, not going to help you, but was a bit surprising for both of us that it was in stock. Small town and only a handful of squares left in it. The box was really dusty, but the...
