Undertightened cork gasket on TH350 and whole thing flooded, clean and reuse?

Previously used a Moroso metal core gasket with a new steel pan and overtightened it. Decided to try a Mahle metal core cork one instead as I read cork is more forgiving. Took the time to hammer down the bolt holes and flatten the steel pan and then unfortunately was gunshy about tightening the...

Replace seals on power steering gear box on truck or bench?

Pretty much what the title says. The power steering gear box on my 77 Sierra Grande is leaking at both the input shaft and the pitman arm, gonna put new seals in this weekend. Any reason not to do it on the truck? Main thing I can think of is getting it on the bench will make it easier to clean...

Rain running down metal ramp along cowl onto firewall, thoughts?

Only had the truck a year and figured out during the latest rain that a cabin leak is from this spot where water consistently runs down a metal ramp like piece at the sides of the cowl. My first thought is to clean up the rusty areas where the water goes and slather it with sealant. But the...

Need just the steering wheel for my 1977 GMC Sierra Grande, would prefer to pick up from someone near Portland OR than pay shipping.

Water leaking from under dash near the brake pedal.

1977 GMC Sierra Grande, after a heavy rain is always water dripping down the rubber flooring to the left of the brake pedal. Is this more likely coming in at the window seal or one of these openings where the hood meets up?

Fixing vapor lock now that I barely made it home, experience with 3 port filters?

Took the truck on its longest drive since owning and sorting it, 60 miles including some freeway time, and on the way back the power started to drop out in surges and I had to limp off the freeway and the rest of the way home. Surging kept getting worse and right before I got home a backfire...

    Thank you post to y'all.

Came onto this forum months ago for help because the '77 GMC Sierra Grande my neighbor gifted me last November was dieseling when I shut it off. At that point I was new enough to know nothing about carburetors or distributors or timing. I didn't even know what I was hearing was called dieseling...

Replaced stock radio with an amplifier and now turning on headlights turns it off

Electrical amateur here, getting that out front. Hooked up old wires that went to the stock radio to an amplifier. Only change was there was a ground wire going to the old radio and no spot on the amplifier for the ground, so just let that hang free. Figured it was just a wire grounding to the...

Decent idle then bog and die in drive and given throttle.

Idles well, have it timed at 12 btdc and mixture screws adjusted. When I give it throttle in park there's no issue, revs nicely, but as soon as it's in drive and I give it throttle it dies. Here's video of the problem and also video of the squirt my accelerator pump gives because it seems decent.

Anyone live in Portland, OR have a shop they like? Need to pass emissions…

Been working on my 77 Sierra Grande for a bit now. Rebuilt the carb, threw a bunch of parts at, got the timing decent, and it’s fun to drive now. But I’m worried I won’t be able to tune it to pass DEQ. SBC 350 with a Rochester Quadrajet on it, but this model doesn’t have an EGR valve standard on...

Stripped crankshaft hole with new harmonic balancer bolt.

Easy job into nightmare. Have the balancer pressed on with the correct tool, brand new bolt all the way in, ready to torque it down. Have my son use an old v belt to hold the pulley/balancer against the torque, go to torque it, and the bolt pops and spins. Here's where I drank a big glass of...

Old v belts vs new v belts

This is part of trying to diagnose why my power steering pump pulley is slipping. When I took out a broken v belt from the alt and crank pulleys it was actually shaped like a v, fitting deep into the slot of the pulleys. I notice the new v belts I get from auto parts store aren't actual v...

    Power steering pump failure?

Steering squeals and jerks at low rpm, especially when turning the wheel slowly. Was hoping the v belt was loose and tightened that. Then flushed the fluid hoping it was that. Still squealing. Could it be anything but the pump? Here's a slow mo video of the pulley stalling when the squeal happens.

This serpentine belt isn't what should've been in my truck right?

Belt was thrown today and looking at replacements none have this v shape to the smooth side. Not only that but the belt had been installed w the v shape toward the pulleys and the textured side out. That's wrong yeah? Wanna make sure I'm not missing something.

    Rebuilding quadrajet, stuck secondaries

Some of you might have seen my other thread on my engine dieseling. Decided to just rebuild and clean the carb before tuning and I'm glad I did as whoever did it before did several things wrong. This is my first time doing this but been making notes and watching videos. Got the whole thing apart...

    What is this part?

What is the part bolted on the wheel well? This isn't my truck, but my truck has this with the rubber middle part ripped out! Hopefully not important.

    Assessing rusty engine...

Been working on a 77 Sierra Grande that was gifted to me, so free aside from the sweat and cash I put into it. It runs, but the engine is pretty rusted on the outside and I'm trying to assess how deep to go into dealing with the rust. Short version is I'm not experienced enough or ready to take...

    Engine dieseling diagnosis…

I’ve already been reading up on it and have some things to try, but wanted to rope you all in for the benefit of wisdom and experience! Just got the fuel line fixed so my 77 Sierra Grand fires right up. If I idle it and turn it off this issue doesn’t happen, but if I even drive it around the...

    Undercarriage cleaning advice...

Getting a 1977 Sierra Grand up and running that was gifted to me. It spent plenty of time sitting in weeds and its undercarriage is grimy, oily, caked on dirt, I'm sure you've all seen what I'm talking about. Eventually I'll do a thorough job of it, but what would you all do first? Just go at it...

After market seatbelts are expensive... looking for other ideas

Both driver and passenger seatbelts in my 77 GMC Sierra Grande are trash, the retractors aren't consistent and the belts are shredded. Rather than buy aftermarket belts I'm thinking of plundering a u-pull-it for some belts from a truck with similar cab dimensions (not expecting to find my...

Trying to get fuel to my engine, a novice's saga...

Neighbor moved and gave me his 77 Sierra Grande last fall, told me engine runs great but thinks sediment from the fuel tank (truck sat a lonnng time) is clogging the fuel line because it only starts if you pull the fuel line off the pump and blow compressed air through it. Sure enough there's no...

Looking for tips on what else to do to give my truck the best chance of starting after fuel tank replacement.

The truck technically runs, I drove it around the block from the neighbor who gave it to me last fall, but it kept stalling due to a clogged fuel line. Aside from that issue it's generally been well maintained, though with long periods of sitting. I'm finally getting around to replacing one of...

Fuel neck filler hose doesn't fit with new tank

Replacing 20 gallon fuel tank with a 16 gallon in 1977 GMC Sierra Grande and when mounted on the tank the filler neck doesn't reach the insert point. Trying to find a neck that's the right size and not having luck so far. Any thoughts? Picture for reference.
