Ordered most of the parts today. Going with the 383 but with the Heads, Intake & Carb off the 350 Crate Motor. Comp Cams recommended their 08-413-8 Hydraulic Roller Cam. 220°/224° Duration, 0.474" Lift on both. Lobe separation of 111°. I'll have to measure for the Push Rod length. I'm...- 74Blaze

@xm20k: A different Cam is definitely in the plan. The one that was in it was spec-ed when the engine was planned to go into the '55 street race application.- 74Blaze

ChuckN, you were right about them being 1.94" Heads. Other than that, the engine is checking out to be pretty much what I was told it was. I'm pretty happy with the overall build. Still thinking I'll probably use the Heads off my 290HP 350. That should drop the compression ratio down to...- 74Blaze

Yeah, I like that set-up better than what I have now (using the Head bolt holes). I'll measure the Valves once I take the Heads off the Block.- 74Blaze

They are the old vintage Corvette style Heads. No accessory holes. That was one of difficulties in using them. I would have get creative in mounting my Steering Pump.- 74Blaze

Thank you, ChuckN. I will do as you suggest. I'm not so worried about the exact compression ratio. What I want to end-up with is a torquier, yet reliable engine so I can better enjoy my Blazer. I'm more convinced that the 383 with the Heads off the GM Performance 350 is the better way to go...- 74Blaze

From what I understand the block (Casting number 10243880) can be used with a Roller Cam, but it currently has non-roller solid lifters (which I won't be using). I will be pulling the Heads, unless I decide to use the 2.02" Heads which are currently on it. The engine was completely re-built...- 74Blaze

Trying to figure out my best options. If I calculate it right. Using the 383 long block with my 290 HP 350 Heads (76cc Combustion Chambers & 8.5:1 Compression) would drop the compression ratio from 11:1 (62cc Combustion Chambers on the 2.02" Heads) to ≈9.4:1. Can somebody check my math?- 74Blaze

Yep. That's what I was afraid of. They guy used the '55 as a street racer back in the 80s & 90s. I'll need to figure out what Cam I want in it for my trail rig. I don't mind the 11:1 compression as I'm thinking that it should run fine on 91-93 octane with the right Cam. No need to worry...- 74Blaze

Wow! I grew up in Fort Wayne, then later worked for Navistar Fort Wayne Engineering Powertrain Group packaging engines in the International trucks for 13 years. Brings back memories of the Fort Wayne plant. It sucked when they shut it down.- 74Blaze

Nice! I worked for International (Navistar at the time) when I bought my K5. I was tempted to buy a Scout, but decided on the Blazer because the parts for it were cheaper and much more readily available. Still, I love the old Scouts. Have fun.- 74Blaze

USA1 Vinyl Dye - Actually Dye or Paint?
Don't know about this brand. Used some of the Dupli-Color on my door panels and such. More like paint than dye. Some flaked-off. Probably should have cleaned the surface better. Maybe used some acetone to prep it better.
