How To Take It Out... ALL of it?

Lessons in life: if your wiring work looks like this, you might need a new hobby....

How To Take It Out... ALL of it?

It's so much worse than it looks, LOL. In a strange twist of irony/fate, I was extracting the last few bits when you posted your reply. Took my left index knuckle down to the bone fishing the bundle out of the dash at the end. I'd post a pic but it's pretty gnarly, LOL. Anyway, it's all out...

How To Take It Out... ALL of it?

If by bulkhead you mean the front face of the dash, that's a no. But EVERYTHING is stripped out of it and off of it. Glove box, ash tray assembly, the entire climate control system including in the engine compartment, the ECU... everything is out. Only things still there are the pedals...

How To Take It Out... ALL of it?

So I finally got to the stage of trying to clean up the wiring in my dash on my '88 Suburban. Over the poor girl's 34 years she's had an aftermarket stereo put in, an alarm system fully integrated with the power locks, lights, and an immobilizer, and someone put a trailer brake box in there...

    Need Resources

@Raider L , the bezel was in typical 30+ year condition, but it's not even that :) Years ago my cluster needed a lot of work. So I yanked it out and bought a set of Autometer MCX gauges... a tach/speedo combo and a quad in 5". They were roughly the same size as the factory large gauges, so it...

    Insulation on a Budget

Boy my phone hates me tonight. So I'll try this again.... Going off the tables they show, which are pretty consistent between brands, I need about 136 sqft, or 4 36 sqft packages of each material. Like I said, a lot of square footage.......

    Insulation on a Budget

The kilmat by itself would be $200. If I did the kilmat + Noico I'd be right there at the $500 by the time I'm done. That's the stuff I'd already been looking at :) Frankenchevy, what kind of Lizard skin material did you use?

    Insulation on a Budget

So I wound up taking a deeper dive than I intended with my '88 suburban and I've blown the budget all to hell. Originally I was just going to do the headliner and pretty up the dash and door panels. A boat load of vinyl, a roll of carpet, and A LOT of AC and dash parts later I'm pretty much...

    Headliner Woes

Service temp on the 375 is only 160F. I actually know it won't work because I used it once upon a time to hang foam insulation from a shed roof and it let go second week of july. But glueing the pig in is an interesting thought. I'm sure i can find an adhesive that would hold up. If nothing...

    Headliner Woes

From what I've found, i'm looking at about $50 PER LAYER of matting to cover it. How many layers are sufficient? That I don't know. That's kind of where some of my doubts are coming from. If I need 4+ layers it's just gotten into stupid cost territory. My fiberglass experience isn't extensive...

    Headliner Woes

So the original press board/cardboard headliner was disintegrated, cracked, and broken in many pieces, which is what prompted the original ABS replacement. The ABS units replace the cardboard with ABS sheets that I assume are vacuum formed. What happened to the ABS liner is that the plastic...

    Headliner Woes

11 years ago I bought an ABS headliner from LMC Truck for my '88 Suburban. "Guaranteed not to sag!" it said in the catalog... uh huh. So 6 months later my new $500 headliner was touching the top of my head. Apparently it should have said "guaranteed not to sag... as long as you don't park it...

    Need Resources

Every time I have attempted to bring my '88 Suburban back from the dead over the 5 years since I parked it I run into the age old no-time-no-money curse. Well I finally have a hedge for both and by darn this monkey is getting back on the road! First order of business is to make it run... which...

    Universal AC Conversion?

Right that's like what I'm talking about. I mean admittedly I'm talking the cheap chinese knock offs of vintage air, but same general concept. Just fixing my underdash evap box is a ton of money and effort. The plastic is all old, brittle, and past its expiration. By the time i fix/buy/fab...

    Universal AC Conversion?

Scratch that. My memory was close but foggy. Looks like it was incorporated into the headliner. The thought of trying to make a GMT400 headliner fit in a GMT100 chassis makes the universal units look like childs play...

    Universal AC Conversion?

It's already converted to 134. If I remember right the GMT 400 had it roof mounted behind the front seat with another box under the seat. Been a while since I wrenched on one though. A custom headliner would be a heck of a project, but I guess it's worth investigating, especially since my...

    Universal AC Conversion?

Last time I priced it through LMC I was looking at over $2k to replace what's bad and add the factory rear air system, and even with that I'd be begging, borrowing, and stealing from junk yards hoping to find the last few pieces for the conversion... which I would need a sample truck in front of...

    Universal AC Conversion?

I have an '88 Suburban. Apparently the original owner, who purchased it in Scottsdale ARIZONA, didn't see any value in rear air. When I first bought the truck as a bachelor it only bothered me a little. Now I have a family and the real possibility of using this beast to transport them in all...

    5.7 TBI Advice Needed

Cool. I'll check it out. Thanks! You're thinking of the air pump tubes that go from the air pump, around the back of the motor, and in to ports on the exhaust manifolds at #1 and #2. I actually kept the air pump, oddly enough. Just welded bungs into the #1 and #2 tubes to accept the pump tubes.

    5.7 TBI Advice Needed

Elaborate for me... How do I "tune" the EFI? Why does the EGR need to come off? Headers help to scavenge the exhaust gasses, the EGR helps to cool the combustion so it can run leaner without burning too hot. If anything, the headers pulling more gasses out means the EGR is needed more. Less...

    5.7 TBI Advice Needed

8 years ago I bought my '88 Suburban with 179k on the clock. Smoked a little on cold start, but very characteristic of dried out valve stem seals and not really worrying to me. I topped off the tank right by the gentleman's house and drove the truck about 40 miles home. Topped the tank off...

Front and Rear Window Regulators the Same?

I'll be paying for this for a while, but I caved and pulled the drivers rear. Aside from being dirty as hell, it looks new. The rollers are a nice, white, supple plastic. They also don't roll for $#!+. I greased 'em as best I could but they're just too damn tight on the ball. So I threw some...

Front and Rear Window Regulators the Same?

All 4 of my power windows are toast on my '88 suburban. I'm looking for new regulators and motors but I can only seem to find front regulators. Are the front and rear different? I only want them to pull them out once, I hate these doors. So I figured I'd find out from the experts :D

    Save The Junk?

That is what happens to a walmart grocery bag in it's second Phoenix summer. And if that's the visual after two summers, imagine what it feels like after 5. If you breath on that crap it crumbles exponentially. That's my first chore Saturday... hit it with a vacuum. Anyway, the pictures didn't...
