80 C10 "Nemo" Build - Started as: Front frame buckled…

I finally rebuilt the driver side drum brakes on the rear. Have to admit that I’ve never done it and other than having to keep referencing where parts go, I was surprised that the brakes aren’t as complex as they look once you get into them. While I can’t say it was a joy to do, I’m not...

    Factory hood stripes?

Here, I found a picture of a lawn tractor with flames painted on. That's about the same level of coolness as racing stripes on a C10.

Lots of progress this weekend. Got the floors in the driver and passenger footwells. Got the inner rockers in as well. I can no longer see daylight through the floorboards. The center rear under seat part of the floor is a different story. Since there isn’t a patch panel that I could find...

80 C10 "Nemo" Build - Started as: Front frame buckled…

Made it out to the shop to start on the cab floor. It’s a combination of good metal and Swiss cheese. My task is to cut out the inner rockers and the floor pans, which have been overlaid with sheet metal tack welded to rusted metal. I started on the driver side and got most of the inner...

Yes, and the cool part (I think) is that though I’m swapping the frame, I actually got the original clean title and the vin plate from the donor vehicle. That will make for a nice “by the way” with the truck if I ever sell it.

80 C10 "Nemo" Build - Started as: Front frame buckled…

I was able to get the hangers and rear end installed on the donor frame this evening. I sourced new grade 8 hardware for the job and torqued down the spring hangers but haven’t torqued the shackles and spring eyes. I will tighten those up and then torque them when there’s load on the axle...

80 C10 "Nemo" Build - Started as: Front frame buckled…

Finally got things cleaned up enough to throw some epoxy on the spring hangers and rear end. I didn’t take enough pics but here is the rear end during paint. And here are the hangers. Probably looking at tomorrow for assembly of the hangers and maybe the rear end. I pulled the drums...

80 C10 "Nemo" Build - Started as: Front frame buckled…

Got the spring hangers de-riveted and cleaned up underneath, which wasn’t that bad. I used a cutoff wheel and cold chisel for the rivets this time since I had just painted the frame and didn’t figure the heat of the plasma rifle would be good for the fresh epoxy. Finally got the doors off...

80 C10 "Nemo" Build - Started as: Front frame buckled…

Neutralized the ospho on the frame today and sprayed it with epoxy. Also had kid help me by running the wire wheel on the bottom of the bed. He did a nice job overall. We washed it and ran some ospho over it to kill rust, then I sprayed it with epoxy but forgot to take a pic. I’ll fix that...

    Favorite Project Truck Sales Pitches

Another one I have seen quite a few times is “lost title.” What, like in a poker game?

Dan, you've been a real nice guy in this thread given all the very direct advice you've received. So I'll try to put this gently: If everybody tells you it's a bad idea, and that it's unsafe, and that you put yourself at legal peril, and all of that doesn't dissuade you; then what if somebody...

    USA1 Industries

I've been waiting 6 months for a dash pad. Bought one from them last year and it took 5 months or so. I got the canned email response. I'm not that confident that I will see a dash pad anytime soon. The good news is that the other items in my order were shipped within a few months. The...

80 C10 "Nemo" Build - Started as: Front frame buckled…

Put some time in early this morning and removed the z bar bracket and the core support brackets. Removing the rivets was a first time thing for me but I went right for the plasma cutter and figured it out fairly quickly. I cut the heads off on the side with surface metal that I was removing (eg...

I should have written that clearer... I plan to drill / blow out the rivets and remove it from the frame, so yes, I'll keep it intact. Thanks...................

80 C10 "Nemo" Build - Started as: Front frame buckled…

As I noted, I'm going to be removing some of the old bracketry on the frame. The truck is an auto (TH350). Can anybody tell me why I should leave the z-bar bracket on the donor frame, which is from a 3 on the tree truck? I am thinking I'll cut it off.

I finished the blasting phase at least as far as I’m taking it with my harbor freight blaster. I spray-bottled some ospho all over to kill whatever rust is left. I still need to remove and replace the core support brackets and cut off the exhaust brackets. I wanted to wait on cutting the...

80 C10 "Nemo" Build - Started as: Front frame buckled…

Got the frame stripped of brackets and suspension with the exception of one fuel line holder that I missed and one rear spring bracket that I’m still marinating in some penetrant. No surprises over all. Didn’t have to bring out the big guns for nuts and bolts( but I do have a full strength...

The back bumper has a small dent on top about the size of the palm of your hand. It’s on the far side in this picture, but I think it could be straightened out. The Front bumper looks good. Other than the surface rust, the only problem area looks like the core support brackets. They are...

80 C10 "Nemo" Build - Started as: Front frame buckled…

Picked up a short bed frame off a farm a couple hours drive from home. Hit the nuts with pb blaster and should be able to disassemble for blasting tomorrow or maybe Monday. Back at the shop I ended up flushing out the engine coolant passages with a hose. I had plugged the engine up and...

Well, I wasn't that far torn down until yesterday. My son and I had taken the front clip off on Sunday and that's when I ran into the frame damage. We pulled the motor and trans yesterday. So, you aren't far off. I have a line on a short bed frame that looks like it will be good with some...

80 C10 "Nemo" Build - Started as: Front frame buckled…

So that it doesn't sound entirely crazy, because I agree with you in general: - I already have bed off, front clip off, engine and trans out, and the interior stripped. - The truck already needed floor pans (prior owner had replaced rockers at some point but the floor pans are in sad shape)...

80 C10 "Nemo" Build - Started as: Front frame buckled…

Took a closer look today and see some stuff I’m not thrilled about. Took the motor and trans out. Frame Motor mounts aren’t tight in the frame, looks like a kink aft of the power steering box. Gonna shop for a frame. I will just feel better about it if it’s done right and resale will be...

80 C10 "Nemo" Build - Started as: Front frame buckled…

You are correct. The core support definitely hasn’t been off the truck for at least 20 years. It did unbolt pretty easy but the body mounts were old and cruddy. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was damage circa 1980s.

80 C10 "Nemo" Build - Started as: Front frame buckled…

Yeah. Reality is that the truck isn’t worth that level of investment at the moment (this isn’t the ‘85 in my profile, it’s an 80 that I picked up for relatively cheap). I think if I were to go the custom chassis route, I’d be starting with a better cab. I thought titles went with the cab, not...

80 C10 "Nemo" Build - Started as: Front frame buckled…

Here’s a fun one. I picked this truck up earlier this year. It’s an 80 c10. Drives straight. Had many more things to fix than this, so I’m just getting to tearing it down. It was in the grass and I crawled under a bit when I bought it, but probably got myself in a hurry, so yeah yeah yeah...
