Difference between HD and non HD front suspension 82 C-20

I discovered tonight both upper control arms are history on my 82 C-20. Looking for new parts, they specify HD and non HD suspension, but I am not sure how to tell the difference. Can somebody please clue me in ? Thanks !!

SM465 L-2-3-4, can't shift into 2nd unless completely stopped (solved)

I have found many manuals that don't like to be downshifted, for whatever reason it may be. Probably mainly due to wear from high miles. Synchros are soft brass and they do tend to wear quickly.

SM465 L-2-3-4, can't shift into 2nd unless completely stopped (solved)

Thanks for the gold sticker ... I'm glad it worked for you !! As you have learned, the secret is to get ALL the gears spinning. I have driven stick shifts since 1968, and semis over the road long haul, so I have encountered just about anything possible with a clutch and manual transmission in my...

SM465 L-2-3-4, can't shift into 2nd unless completely stopped (solved)

Here's my suggestion until the space aliens quit messing with you, when moving slowly (2 to 5 mph perhaps) shift into neutral, let clutch out, and "blip" the gas pedal a little to spin the gears, stab the clutch pedal in and see if it goes into gear. The theory is just like driving a semi, shift...

    inline six compatability

I recall one in a 1942 deuce and a half 10 wheel drive flatbed. The starter was a pedal on the floor next to the gas pedal. Amazing amount of work that truck would do with that six banger.

    inline six compatability

My memory is not what it used to be. The 265 might also work, but I'm sure the 235 was different. And I don't do metric engines, I am a cubic inches person.

    inline six compatability

One of my favorite things about Chevy is they used the same bellhousing pattern for sixes and eights, with only a couple exceptions. I wish F*rd would have been that smart. 230, 250,292, 302,305,307,327,350,400,454 etc all use the same bellhousing pattern. And probably more engines too, smaller...

Auto or manual locking hub ?

There are many variables when calculating one's needs, and I see all sides living in 4 wheel drive country for the past 50 years and a lot of that remote and off the grid. If running manual hubs, the motto to live by is: "THE TIME TO LOCK YOUR HUBS IN IS BEFORE YOU NEED THEM." That has worked...

Auto or manual locking hub ?

My preference is manual locking hubs, have heard too many horror stories of somebody out 4 wheeling going downhill, and using the engine as part of braking via the load placed on it from all the wheels being locked in (mainly manual transmission, of course) and the auto hubs disengaged because...

    1? 2? 4?

If memory serves me right from my old six banger days, it should have a Rochester one barrel, and they used a fairly good sized one. Many guys would get an adaptor and install a staged two barrel, that gave some better fuel economy running a single primary barrel in light throttle applications...

Dang, and I have two of them sitting out in the weather and I have zero use for them, will probably just scrap them out one day soon.

    it's stupid question time

Glad you got it !! And if anything gets done without a certain level of swearing, I wonder why it's going too well.

    it's stupid question time

That's because this squarebody forum is NOT all stuck up and snooty, we're a down to earth group with a common interest.

    it's stupid question time

As many of us are already painfully aware driving older vehicles, necessity is the mother of invention. To @mikeoverland : I won't repeat the words here that I used trying to get that fitting apart, then the idea hit me to make a short handled flare fitting wrench to try. Just make sure you use...

    it's stupid question time

Well, it does the job and at least it isn't METRIC !!!!! And a little voice in my head says I am never going to hear the end of the aliens.

    it's stupid question time

I had to replace the flex lines on my square, and those fittings on the inside of the frame were an absolute bear to get to, zero space to access them with normal tools. So, I sacrificed a Chinese wrench that I never used and made a flare fitting wrench out of it, fits in the tight space just...

    it's stupid question time

Are you talking about the large nut that surrounds the fitting and steel line on the inside of the frame ?

    Help with identification

Maybe it's a mounting bracket for a homing device planted by the space aliens ? Neither of my squares has that strange part either.

Wanted: 82 heater box w/AC interior portion

The mounting tabs with the bolts have broken off my heater box interior portion and I am in need of a good used box if anybody has one.

    battery post mystery

Two of my vehicles, my 84 K10 and suzuki samurai did the same thing. Totally unpredictable when the posts would be so cruddy they lose connection. They would start and run fine no issues, then out of the blue, I am late because I need to clean the terminals. It's a good chance the space aliens...

What defined the shape of a SM465 shifter? The rod part

Find a shifter from a SM420 and drop it in the hole. Perfect interchange and a LOT more comfortable to shift the gears.

    Lost an ignition module. Why?

Yes, that is quite correct. It's not uncommon to have a total advance of 40-42 degrees (mechanical and vacuum combined). Keep in mind this part of engine theory, it takes time to burn the fuel mixture, so as RPM increases, the spark has to occur sooner to achieve the proper burn time.

    Lost an ignition module. Why?

I don't see the need to replace anything other than the module if that restores the operation. But, while you have it open, check the mechanical advance weights for worn pivot bushings, weak springs, or dirt/rust that can cause them to stick.
