Truck doesn't run right in drive

He had to have the distributor out. What is your timing set at?

    Exhaust ideas!?

Mine go straight out the back, but I never tow anything. Routing out the side lets you tow without getting exhaust residue all over your boat/trailer/whatever.

    I might be in trouble

Yeah, a 454 long block crate engine is like three grand.

    Exhaust ideas!?

You will notice the difference with either an X-pipe or an H-pipe. V8s do not fire R-L-R-L, they fire L-R-R-L-R-L-L-R (1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2). The second beat of the double pulse every revolution of the crank meets resistance from the pressure of the prior pulse still in the exhaust. Relieving this...

That cam requires 9.5:1 compression ratio. Did you change the heads or pistons as well?

83 350 runs horrid starting when cold

It sounds like the well plugs are leaking. This is a known problem, with a known solution. Do not buy one off the shelf. There are lots of little air bleeds and such inside that are adjusted (drilled) for the vehicle/engine application. Either have Mark rebuild it, or get one built for your...

    Choke adjustment?

    Battery to Alternator Bracket Ground

It MUST be to the engine in order to provide a ground for the starter. If you connect it to the frame, you won't be able to turn it over. An accessory bolt hole is good, like under the head of the bolt that connects the alternator bracket to the engine. Make sure to dress the wire out of the...

83 350 runs horrid starting when cold

Yeah, the other way to adjust it is get the truck warmed up, shut it off. Then adjust the choke housing until the choke plate just starts to move closed, and back it up one notch.

83 350 runs horrid starting when cold

Also, my truck doesn't like ANY throttle to start, ever. I push once to the floor, and release, and hit the key, and that's it.

83 350 runs horrid starting when cold

Is your choke plate closing when it is cold out? Do you, before trying to start it, push the throttle pedal all the way to the floor once, to release the choke from the cam detent so it can reset to its cold position?

    shorty spark plugs

You probably want to use the ACDelco R45TS. R is resistor, 45 is the heat range, T is the shape/size of the flange, and S is for short. Most commonly GM-recommended plug for our era 350s in lots of flavors. Generally speaking, you want to use the coldest plug that doesn't foul. "Hot" and...

    Building my 350

No clue here. I'd call Comp Cams. Also, hopefully you will get some other responses here.

    Building my 350

At 10:1 CR, I'm showing about 420 hp with 430 lbft with the 12-209-2 cam. You should download the Camquest software (free from Comp Cams) and plug in some numbers. You can put the flow numbers from the Dart catalog right into the simulation. If you have trouble setting up the parameters, let...

    Building my 350

Sounds like the Dart 127322 heads. 200cc is awfully big runners for a 350. What about the 180s? (Dart 127122) Guy built one like that on another forum. Used the Comp Cams 12-238-2, and loved it. 402 hp, 430 lbft, and a big broad torque curve. Maybe a 2000 stall on that. Gives about 375...

    Performance question

Something people have mentioned here before, and which is a bugger to diagnose. There is a little piece of rubber vacuum hose an inch or two long that connects the <mumble, mumble> to the <whatchamacallit> on the back of the throttle body. This hose is almost never replaced during normal...

    Timing help

One of two things. 1) You didn't mention, but you did disconnect the vacuum advance hose from the carburetor to the distributor, right? If not, it may be in vacuum advance when at idle (depending on which vacuum source is being used), and should be running something like 30 degrees advance...

    Timing help

To be safe, set it at 12. But your best performance and mileage will be at 16 or 17, as long as you don't get knocking. A more or less stock engine with decent regular gas shouldn't knock below 20.

    Timing help

The stock distributor curves work just fine for most engines. And an adjustable one can be a PITA to get even decently right if you don't have setup equipment to see what is really going on. A lot of people, based on what I see on the forums, end up worse off than if they just got a stock...

Here's what the stock setup will look like: I added a timing wheel behind my crankshaft pulley so it would have more marks and be easier to read:

    Timing help

Timing is trivial. It's basically just a strobe light triggered by the engine spark signal. The timing light is going to have two clips, sort of like jumper cable clips but smaller, one red and one black. Those clip on the battery. The other wire will either have an inductive pickup, which...

    Fuel pump leak

Why wouldn't you just use the stock fuel pump? If I'm reading the parts book right, GM #6471180 is listed for 1977 K-20 w/350, 400 w/4BC, w/AT. It's like 27 bucks at rockauto.com. You're not going to pull more fuel than a 400, right? BTW, pix on the net show this as having the return line...
