Have to start in neutral or hold the shifter.

Check all the bushings in the linkage. There is a plastic bushing and spring in the pivot that goes from the transmission to frame. There is also a plastic bushing on the steering column pivot. Any slop in those will make adjustment of the NSS a hassle. You use to be able to find the bushings...

    Cruise Control wire

Crap, I forgot about the sleeve! The sleeve slides out the bottom of the column.

    Cruise Control wire

That’s exactly why the hole is there. This is one of the few times the engineers designed something with serviceability in mind.

    Cruise Control wire

Don’t try to remove the connector!! Put the tilt steering column in the straight position. Get some thin solid wire, tie the wire thru that little hole in the connector. Pull the old switch wire up thru the column, tie the new switch cable to the picture wire. Pull it back down the column. Work...

Where to mount TH700 manual lock-up switch?

A lockup converter locks the turbine of the converter to the cover inside the converter, eliminating any slip. A conventional converter will have 200-300 rpm of slip at cruising speed. You could use the cruise on/off switch, the solenoid draws very little current.

Where to mount TH700 manual lock-up switch?

You can probably get away with it, as long as you have a good transmission cooler. Most of the heat in a transmission comes from the converter. It’s pretty easy to make the lockup functional. It helps fuel economy, and make the car a little more comfortable on the highway.

    Alt Light addition

The alternator light is powered by the gauges fuse in the factory fuse box. I know all too well the hassles of custom wiring. When I first started playing around with cars, I use to run wiring without any thought of how I would service things later. The ability to remove and disconnect...

Where to mount TH700 manual lock-up switch?

On cars/trucks with column mounted headlight dimmer switches I have used a floor mounted dimmer switch. One project car we used one of the cheap push buttons included in line locks that are designed to slip over transmission shifters. He put it on the column shifter lever and wired it thru a...

    Alt Light addition

This is an option. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/aww-510287 Basically, the way the warning light works on a GM car is: Power is supplied to one side of the warning light from the pink/black tracer wire powered from the Gauges fuse. The other side of the light is connected to the brown...

    Interior Bulb ID

Pretty sure there is a bulb chart in the owners manual. Most dash lights are 194. Warning lights or turn signal lights are sometimes 168, same bulb design but slightly higher wattage and just a bit brighter. I’m guessing GM did that help get your attention if the bulb comes on.

    Ignition switch wiring help

Just from memory, I don’t have a book handy. Red is battery. Brown is powered in “run” and accessory, it won’t have power in crank. Purple (might have a yellow tracer) is crank, it goes to the neutral safety switch and comes out solid purple. Orang is also ignition, it powers the heater, power...

Th400 magnet? Are they supposed to have one?

If it doesn’t have one, put one in. It seems most original 350/400 cores I have taken apart don’t have magnets. GM probably saved a penny or 2 by not installing magnets. I put one in every trans I build. It’s cheap insurance and cheap diagnostic aid.

mods for LONG LIFE (ie a rustfree chassis for decades??)

I know this thread is almost 10 years old, but I’ll share my thoughts. Without a doubt, live in a dry climate!! I have taken apart Arizona cars and decided right then my next project car will be a dry climate project. Break a bolt loose, unscrew it with your fingers. No need to PB Blaster...

    Oil pressure help

If you still have the old filter, use some tin snips to cut it open. Look for debris in the filter media, if it’s clean then you can be reasonably sure the engine isn’t eating itself. I would suggest putting another gauge on it, just to verify the problem is real. Regardless of the numbers...

Here's one for the Holley/Eddy debate...

I have seen video of the race from the 60-70s, and Roadkill garage took an old junkyard Chevelle (I think) to the top. I noticed it was paved. The difference was pretty dramatic

I had always read the top of pikes peak was almost 15k feet. It sound like it’s on top of a 10000 feet mountain.

    Another 700r4 question. Weird happening

The plunger is in the valve body. Can you ask the builder about the valve body? Find out what he did to it. The springs are available thru TranStar and other venders. I’ll see if I can find a part number.

Here's one for the Holley/Eddy debate...

I have heard this argument as well. When these trucks were new, people didn’t tune them every time the weather changed. Altitude has a much bigger influence on jetting than temperature. Holley says go up one jet size for ever 30 degree temperature change. Assuming your carb is tuned...

    Another 700r4 question. Weird happening

It’s kinda common for the TV valve inside the valve body to stick. TransGo and a few other venders sell a tiny spring to prevent the valve from hanging up. Let the shop who did the rebuild look at it before messing with it yourself. Don’t even tell them you looked at it. Unfortunately, some...

    400 SBC Compression Ratio

Disable the ignition, remove all the plugs, wire the throttle wide open. Crank the engine the same number of revolutions for each cylinder. The rule of thumb: the reading on the gauge from the first full puff should be at least half the final number. There shouldn’t be more than 10%...

    LS swap lost oil pressure

Remove the oil filter, use some tin snips and cut it open. Look inside the filter media for debris. If the filter is clean, rest assured the engine is probably fine. Install a mechanical gauge to verify the engine actually has low oil pressure. If it’s in fact low, look into the o ring. I’m...
