    Diagnosing white smoke on startup

on my 1990 TBI the valve is in the passenger side valve cover and connects to the front of the tbi. the driverside is just a plastic hose connecting the other valve cover to the base of intake below the air filter.

    Intake Manifold Install

must have had something stuck in one of the tbi ports somewhere causing the issue.

    Intake Manifold Install

The question marks are confusing. Did it run fine and not stall after that?

    truck runs hot

Did you try a new instrument cluster gauge?

    truck runs hot

the computer uses the temp sensor next to the thermostat housing. so don't use that location.

    Intake Manifold Install

check to make sure you have all the vac lines hooked up correctly to the TBI. you may also check the EGR (or take the vac lines off at the solenoid and plug them) and see if that helps. does it seem like it is loading up on fuel and flooding itself out? do you have access to a scanner or...

    Issues with seatbelts

the reactors use a hanging weight that locks up when the vehicle is rapidly decelerating. the belts are a little tricky, with a wound up spring that is used to retract and maintain tension that sits outside the spool for each retractor. one of my springs popped out and it was an exercise on...

    Intake Manifold Install

spend some time with the emissions and drivabiity manual, available in the reference library of this site. it is the GM TBI Bible. quick reset is to jumper AB on ALDL with a paperclip and turn key on for 30-45sec. that forces IAC closed and lets the computer know where 0 IAC counts is located...

    Intake Manifold Install

idle air control valve. screws into the TBI next to the TPS. wondering if you removed it or otherwise did anything with it that would have plugged the passageway or if it needs to be reset.

    Intake Manifold Install

did you remove the IAC when you RandR the manifold?

    Intake Manifold Install

I am not following. you should have started the truck, let it idle til warmed up, disconnected the EST, set timing to 0, turn truck off, reconnect EST. then you are good to go. is that what you did?

    Intake Manifold Install

@Mango did you reconnect the EST connector after you set the timing? with that disconnected, you will have code 42, seemingly low idle, and it will be hard to start. and if you didn't disconnect it when you set the timing to 0, your timing is way retarded.

    1990 Suburban ECM-1 fuse blows, again & again :-(

Reviving this long dead thread because I had ECM1 blow on my 1990 suburban when I hit a bump yesterday. Couldn't find anything wrong at the injector harness, which seems the most common place to pinch a wire on this circuit, and because earlier that day I had replaced the air filter. Things also...

Automatic transmission newbie asking basic questions

there is a seal between the transmission and transfer case that has gone bad. you have to pull the transfer case to fix it. as long as you keep topping off the transmission and relieving the excess from the transfer case you can live with it as long as you want to keep playing that game.

    Location of cowl drains?

once they start to get too plugged up with stuff and drain slow, water will start to come in the cab above the kick panel during heavy rain, or at least that's why I cleaned mine a couple years ago

    Location of cowl drains?

on my 1990 burb you have to remove a little plastic cover piece behind the fender opening from underneath to access the drains to clean them out. there may also be a little foam piece you have to pull out of the way to reach up and clean them out. I've done mine once and it was a flush, clean...

1977 C10 AC not working, solution suggestions

the cycling switch is adjustable, at least on the later years (mine is a 1990 burb). so you don't need a new switch, maybe?

SOLVED! 1987 350 TBI Timing advance issues

tan and black wire should have 5v if RPM>400. so high idle is a separate problem than your code 42. jumper AB on ALDL for about 30sec to force IAC closed. then unplug the harness connector to IAC so it will stay closed. then see what RPM is after you start it. if it is still 2000rpm, you...

SOLVED! 1987 350 TBI Timing advance issues

I think your ESC is working correctly based on your description of testing the knock sensor. I'd sort out the code 42 and see if that goes away..

SOLVED! 1987 350 TBI Timing advance issues

on the ICM harness - black and red wire should ground through the ECM all the time. verify it is grounded good ground. black and tan should have 5v when RPM>400. under 400RPM, or with the wire disconnected by brake booster, the timing is running only on the ICM timing. this will cause poor...

SOLVED! 1987 350 TBI Timing advance issues

if you disconnect the tan/black EST wire and nothing noticeable changes with the engine running, then that is an issue. does the check engine light work? do you have a code 42 stored? I'd start reading up Section 6 of the drivability and emissions manual that covers the EST system.

Finally have this girl home, now what?

bad hwy manners can result from larger tires without adjusting the DRAC settings. is the speedo off? start with the basics - check timing, vacuum (with a gauge) and fuel pressure. check condition of vacuum lines to TBI and routing to make sure they are correct. check plugs, wires, cap, and...
