87 Custom Deluxe 30 shut off while idling.

lost power to everything or just the ECM? are the ECMB and ECM1 fuses OK? does rhe check engine light up when you turn the key to on?

    Intake Manifold Install

if it hiccups and the light came on, the code was set again. clearing codes can be done by disconnecting the negative battery terminal. but it sounds like you have an intermittent issue. check the ICM harness up against the firewall to make sure nothing is rubbed through. check to make sure no...

    Intake Manifold Install

it will store codes for about 30 starts. but if the code came back after your parts replacement, and may be intermittent, that seems to point to a bad connection or maybe a wiring issue somewhere in the ICM harness.

    Intake Manifold Install

yes, has to be an issue in EST or the 2 reference wires from ICM. that's the only things that will set code 42. could also be a problem at the connector plug at the ICM or the EST wire. Diagnostics in post #65

Cruise control works for a while then starts to lose speed

I'd just replace all the vacuum lines under the hood as cheap insurance, verify the check valve off the manifold line is working, and make sure the vacuum reservoir holds vacuum. if that all checks, you will have to look closer at the servo pod to make sure it holds a vacuum. I've seen YouTube...

Cruise control works for a while then starts to lose speed

mines a 90 and is still is a vacuum system, although there is an electrical control box that is between the switch and the vacuum servo pod that tells the servo what to do. not holding speed is most likely a vacuum issue in my limited experience. chapter 9 of the GM service manual covers...

Cruise control works for a while then starts to lose speed

agree, sounds like it is having an issue holding vacuum. check the hoses and the vac reservoir on the driver side fender under the hood in addition to the pod that attaches to the throttle.

I've used the paste it comes with normally. no issues with early failure of AC Delco

make sure it is an AC Delco. it's a common failure point and I carry a couple spares in the truck at all times...

Need ideas for a modern steering wheel.

yep, that's what I have! my burb was equipped with just about every option, so it is not surprising that the wheel was an option.

Need ideas for a modern steering wheel.

I like the wheel on my 1990 suburban. I think 88-94 are all the same and likely are a direct replacement.

    Intake Manifold Install

if it wasn't doing it before you replaced the manifold, and is new after, it is likely something that got touched somehow. I'd guess the issue to be in the ICM harness in the EST wire or one of the 2 reference wires. the issue could be in the wire or the connectors themselves. did you go through...

    Intake Manifold Install

I don't think plugged EGR will result in 42. it will eventually throw a code when it self tests at highway cruise. but I think it is 32

    Intake Manifold Install

is it still code 42? because if it only does it at operating temp (likely when it hits closed loop), it makes me think it may not be ignition related.

    Intake Manifold Install

I'd still look at the vac hoses. the cannister, PCV, EGR solenoid, and MAP sensor should all come off different TBI ports. some are manifold vac and some are ported vac and it probably matters that they are all on the right ports. that might not be the issue, but while you are messing around may...

did you try to follow the diagnostics for code 42 in the drivability manual?

what is this vacuum arrangement? looks like something that should be hooked up to the TBI is Teed into the PCV valve line?

    Best brand for LED conversion?

I dont have pictures of the trimming. you only have to trim to fit a 90degree bulb. if you use the straight 9006xs and 9005xs straight bulbs they come with you don't have to trim at all. I still run the 9005xs in the highs because they are actually plenty bright and you would also have to trim...

    Best brand for LED conversion?

not a lot of support for 89-91 given the odd size and limited years of use. the LMC housings with glass lenses with the adjuster buckets trimmed to fit a 9012 bulb is a good option that I am running. I have thought about dropping in a diode dynamics SL1 LED bulb, but haven't bit the bullet yet...

ground work best on bare metal. although I am not sure if that is the result of your code 42 (if you are still getting code 42). did you disconnect the neg terminal to clear codes and try again? if code 42 comes back, follow the diagnostics in the drivability manual.

my ground is here next to the Coolant Temperature Sensor
  24. G

several TBI sensors use that ground. it comes out of the harness by the coolant temp sensor wires.

    Intake Manifold Install

code 42 only sets when the EST wire is disconnected. not sure if anything else in ICM will set it (which is certainly frustrating sometimes to diagnose). check the connection at the disconnect to set timing and at the ICM to be sure the connectors all look good.
