    Transmission Vendor Recommendations

There are some transmission shops around the tri-city area near me (Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley) and all of them are WAY overpriced for the questionable quality of work one will receive on their transmission. I sold a truck cheap a couple years ago because I had no help to do the...

    Charging system WEIRDNESS, need advice

It failed a hydrometer test, the only "load" test I have is turning the key to start the truck, and that happened suddenly after the battery was charged and allowed to sit for two days disconnected. So I guess technically speaking, it failed both.

    Charging system WEIRDNESS, need advice

MYSTERY SOLVED: Defective battery. I had no reason to suspect it could be the cause as I have had absolutely zero problems with it and it has held a charge and done its job flawlessly. I feel a tad stupid now, expecting something more complicated being the issue.

It's sad but true, "they don't make anything like they used to and hardly anybody puts pride in their work".

The results of the test of the rebuilt alternator : Rectifier - FAIL. Diodes - FAIL. Regulator - FAIL. Now, the big question is if a defective stator or rotor would cause any or all of those readings on the test machine.

The rebuild kit came with brand new diode assembly, but it could be defective. All metal to metal connections within the alternator were clean and shiny.

Using the in dash factory voltmeter as well as an expensive fluke meter and my trusty radio shack digital meter at the battery and comparing the readings.

    Charging system WEIRDNESS, need advice

My one good neighbor came over today and helped me, we did a hydrometer test on the battery, the float was into the red and electrolyte was a tad low, so we added distilled water and ran a battery charger. We do suspect a battery issue as a contributing factor. Cleaned all battery connections...

That's exactly my thinking too, if it isn't an easy fix, the truck is going away by ANY MEANS POSSIBLE, I am not going to spend any money on it at this point.

    Charging system WEIRDNESS, need advice

That is a good test, if it wasn't so hot outside and if I had the energy to do it. Truck isn't idling too slow but good thought anyway. It's possible the rebuild kit i bought has at least one defective part, and if that's the case I will see about a refund from the seller. MAYBE O'Reilly's...

    Charging system WEIRDNESS, need advice

Try again ........ I have battery voltage at the red wire in the two prong connector, key off. I have battery voltage at the small black wire when key is on. I ran a heavy wire from the battery positive post to the alternator battery terminal, NO CHANGE, the truck still has the issue. And no...

Nope, this is my 4x4 I use only as an emergency backup when we get a storm here and the roads get muddy and I absolutely HAVE to be able to get out. For me to use the 4x4 truck on dry roads, somebody had better be dying or their house on fire. The truck with the control arms issue is a two wheel...

    Charging system WEIRDNESS, need advice

I don't think so, I'm sure it would make some kind of squealing noise if it was slipping. I can grab the alternator fan, spin it and it moves the cooling fan pulley on the water pump, but it isn't easy to make it spin. I will try tightening the belt some more in the morning, but not gonna hold...

Thanks, I will get the alternator tested to make sure the rebuild went well, but the truck did the same thing with the old alternator. How do I test the wires for high resistance ? If the problem doesn't get figured out, the truck is no good to me and is going away, might save the 383 stroker...

84 K-10 with 350. For a couple years I have had an issue with what appeared to be a weak alternator, so today I grabbed a spare from the shelf, installed a rebuild kit, and swapped them in the truck. At idle I get about 10.5 volts, NOTHING but the engine running to use any power. Rev the engine...

    High Amp Alternator?

If it turns out you need more amps, here are three choices. American made. Any good parts store should have what you want, but be prepared to shell out some good money and eat a healthy core charge. Also, you will most likely need to do some modifications to your mounts.

    Sheared steering arm studs

Many years ago when I had my 66 K-20, the studs sheared off while I was WAY in the back country in the mountains. I disassembled the wheel bearings, rotor, spindle, axle shaft, etc to be able to repair it. Didn't take much for tools, and the only special tool was the spindle locknut socket. The...

SBC HEI Distributor clicking loudly and timimng won't stay set where i put it.

Yep, they did go up, probably due to supply chain issues or slave labor on strike across the ocean. The GM08 (pictured) is what you want. The GM14 is computer controlled (ESC) for $163 Talk to them in the store, they should find a way to at least give you 10% off ...

DAMN, they went up. I think I paid $99 or $109 for mine not all that long ago. I should look at their website and look around .............. has to be one for less.

SBC HEI Distributor clicking loudly and timimng won't stay set where i put it.

That would have been the ESC system. Just run the standard single wire HEI distributor in your fresh engine, set the timing to where the engine is happy and runs right, and relax and enjoy it. No need for more crap to go wrong and take away performance when you might need it the most all in the...

SBC HEI Distributor clicking loudly and timimng won't stay set where i put it.

I may be wrong because I have been out of the loop on "new" stuff, but it makes sense to me the ESC uses the computer to control the timing, and there should be more than just a power lead to the distributor to allow that function to work. You'll never see a computer on my trucks doing anything...

GOOD BOY !!! That takes a huge load off my mind, and eliminates the possibility of that being the reason for slop in the dizzy shaft.

Here's something I just happened to think of ........did you use a steel bushing or shaft to the oil pump/distributor drive, or did you use one of those nylon ones that comes in the gasket kit ? The nylons won't hold up, they like to crack and break.
