    10W-40 for Chevy 350

Your valve stem seals are probably gone. If you aren't using more that a quart every 750 miles, I wouldn't worry about it. In case you are wondering, 10W 30 and 10W 40 are both 10W oil. They have polymers in them so that they will not get thinner as their temperature goes up - 10W 40 has more...

350 Chevy with carb 0 oil psi

That is something I wished I could do on the 81 I used to have. That electric oil pressure gauge was erratic. Wish I knew how to weld. James

    Installing windshield in a Squarebody

I have one of each, but I think I will have the pros do it - if they break it, they replace it, but if I break it, I have to replace it. James

    Installing windshield in a Squarebody

My first time installing a windshield. I have seen on U-Tube that the rubber channel is supposed to go on the pinch-weld and the windshield installed that. We have been trying that method and broke two windshields. I always though that you put the channel on the windshield and rope the...

New crate engine oil priming/ ignition timing impact if the distributor is mis-installed

What I do with GM engines from the mid 50s on is use a large screwdriver that I removed the handle from. I put that screwdriver shank in an electric drill and use it to spin the oil pump, which I first pack with vasoline. Much easier to prime that way. You can tell when the oil system is...

    Timing W/ Manifold vacuum

Never tried it on Chevy engines, but I know from experience that 70s AMC engines didn't like that - they would at first try to jump smartly off the line, but then hesitate and spit back at you if you hooked up to vacuum advance to manifold vacuum. J. B.

    74 k10 going 55 mph is at 3,500 rpm

A good way to tell is to jack the rear end and have a couple of buddies turn both rear wheels together one complete revolution, and you see how many revolutions the driveshaft turns. If you have 3:73 gears, your driveshaft will make a little less than four complete revolutions, but if it makes...

    74 k10 going 55 mph is at 3,500 rpm

3500 at 55 MPH? You must have 4:56 gears for the engine to be revving that high. Others are saying that maybe your trans isn't upshifting into 3rd, but I have a hard time believing that you wouldn't be aware of a problem like that. J.B.

    454 460 horsepower swap into a 1987 V10 with 700r4

I don't think a 700R4 can handle the torque that a 454 will produce. I would get a Turbo 400 instead. And with tires that big, you are going to have to use much deeper gearing. Maybe around 4:10, or else 1st gear will be much too tall. Mike

350 Chevy with carb 0 oil psi

My 81 Square Body used to do that. Sometimes read fine, other times very low, sometimes zero, but it had hydraulic lifters, and they would have collapsed and clattered it oil pressure really was zero. Tried to swap in the mechanical oil gauge of the 73 - 75 trucks, but would have had to use a...

1973 Monte Carlo Very Rare Factory Sunroof - $6,500

Sweet! My dream 73 Monte Carlo is a 3 speed manual car. I think that was the only year it was offered with a 3 speed. Must be as rare as a hen's tooth. J.B.

Might also be leaking wheel cylinder(s).

    Burning Oil At Start Ups

If he is not using more than a quart every 700 miles, he doesn't need to rebuild the engine, just maybe the heads. Might only need new valve guide seals. J.B.

    4.1 mpg?

Also, are you sure that Edlebrock carb is jetted correctly for your engine? You might want to get some additional jets and experiment, and check the float levels at the same time. J.B.

    4.1 mpg?

If your new tires are bigger around, then in the city your engine is being burdened, as you have the effect of much taller gearing. Good at high speeds on the freeway, but in the city, requires a lot more throttle just to move off. That hurts gas mileage. Also, if you haven't changed your...

Has anyone bought the LMC dash?

I bought one quite some time ago, and like your's, it doesn't have any metal in it. I used speed nuts where the dash bezel goes, otherwise you can't tighten the two outer corners, and the inner ones might even pull out of place. It has stood up to the sun very well, but when not installed, it...

    knocking noise

With both valves on a cylinder closed, and the lifters on the base circle, the rockers should be 2 turns tighter than zero lash, assuming that your hydraulic lifters are good. Best to set them with the engine running and warmed up, that way you will be able to tell if a lifter is stuck, as the...

Sounds more like clattery lifters than a knocking sound.

    Towing with a 305 V8?

That changes I would use 4:10 with a 700R4, or even 4:56. If you change to a Turbo 350, then, you probably don't want to go any deeper than 4:10, or else it will be screaming at 60MPH. If you have a stick, you probably want a 4:56, especially if you have Overdrive. Mike

Taking off passenger head about 37 bolts so far

You probably have a small hole in one or two pistons.

    Towing with a 305 V8?

I would use the 305. Its good enough, it just needs gears.

    Diagnosing white smoke on startup

WHITE smoke or blueish smoke? If it is indeed smoke and not steam, probably your valve stem seals - oil is seeping down the valve stems when the engine is off, and getting burned upon startup. OHV engines are notorious for this when those seals are gone. James

    Towing with a 305 V8?

It can be done, but not with what I think the rear end is. There was no 5 speed automatics, so you have a 700R4, which was not very good in it's early years. I would put a 4:10 rear in it - your 4th gear is Overdrive, so your cruising ratio will be about 2:7 or 2:8 to one, plenty tall for the...

    C20 for towing

I would go with a 400 or a 454 engine and either a 4 speed with a granny 1st or a turbo 400. You should have a 3:73 for a turbo 400, a 4:10 for a stick. Keep in mind though, that Squares are not new vehicles, so be prepared to sink some dollars into it to make it mechanically as good as new...
