Before tossing parts at it why not try diagnosing first? As suggested above check fuel pressure and volume. Ethanol is not friendly to old fuel systems.- fast 99

Yeah, that's possible. Rentals are usually not treated the same as owned. Doesn't GM have issues with torque convertors shedding metal requiring tranny o-hauls? May be that was the problem with it. Idle Mixture Screws Do Not Adjust Anything on 1974 454.
Whatever the reason quality sucks. Bought a cam sensor once for a Hyundai that had an OD was too large to fit in the hole. Don't have to design the part just copy it. agree, but sometimes I forgot that and turned the headlights or another high amp circuit on. Yes, a 10-amp draw is very excessive and normally much less.- fast 99

What are the actual readings? Another idle suggestion. Many times if the idle is increased to just below the max emissions will clean up, sometimes quite considerably. Thats an option but have to be careful the load doesn't exceed the fast blow fuse. Last I knew they were about $10. After buying several I use the shunts. Picture is from Amazon. But the one I use has only one bar, cheaper. Don't think that really matters. Made leads for the battery. Good idea to use the neg side, won't short to ground. Below is how it's used.- fast 99

As an electrician this might help. I use a shunt with Fluke on the millivolt scale for draws. It allows anything to be turned on or off except starter. Max draw is .05 millivolt across the shunt.- fast 99

As manufacturers consolidated part numbers this became a problem. Either too fast or too slow however the adjustment can help the situation provided it isn't one with an index tab. Best option is a GM stat. Any pick and pull yards nearby?- fast 99

Doesn't matter as long as it is inserted into the circuit. On the starter sticking, it is either a bad starter or electrical such as the ignition switch.- fast 99

Another way is hook a test light in series at the battery post. Preferably on the negative side. If it lights up there's a draw. A common non-fused draw is the alternator, disconnect it.- fast 99

Truck backfires and doesn’t start
Disable the ignition and crank with the starter, does it sound even.? If a cylinder isn't filling properly when the engine rotates a bad cylinder the starter will increase in speed. Kind of a quick and dirty compression test. If uneven the diagnostic procedure takes a different turn.- fast 99

Oil pump options and questions
Standard pumps work fine. High volume pump as a repair crutches another issue. If 4x4 pan is easy to remove. Roll new main and rod bearings in. Have done that successfully on many customer vehicles. I do like the electric thermostats better if one can be found that unwinds at the correct speed for the application. They are not dependent on a clean intake passage or working heat riser.- fast 99

That's correct, there is exhaust within a manifold passage, but it never blends with the intake charge unless EGR equipped. Exhaust should never enter those tubes. If present they are broken or rotted out. I have done countless carb conversions and left that plate in the manifold. Like I said...- fast 99

No, exhaust [for preheat] is on the outside of the tubes never inside. Any tube leak would be an unregulated EGR. Unless installing a plate for appearance just leave stock one on and proceed with choke conversion. It is a tube preheated by the exhaust. Will not affect drivability in any way unless rotted out.- fast 99

Throttle sticking
If base idle isn't adjusted properly throttle plates can stick. In other words throttle is closed too much causing plates to stick in the bore. Disconnect throttle cable to isolate it from the TBI unit. Check if it still sticks.- fast 99

Emissions pipes
Yes, some vehicles had dual bed converters. Not sure if 87's had it. That was an odd emissions time frame with dual air pumps, carbs, some carbs with feedback and TBI. All dependent on GVW and motor option. A vacuum hose manufacturer delight.- fast 99

New engine installed - need TBI timing/idle help
Have seen that connector under the carpet or near firewall inside floor passenger side. If under hood it is separate and usually easy to find. Not sure of the year have also seen it behind the glove box.- fast 99
