What have you done to your square lately??

Installed the Dorman C3500 steering shaft to eliminate the old rag joint. I had to get a 10mm x 1.50 x 30mm flanged bolt for the gearbox side and a couple of gentle squeezes in the vice to elongate the column end. Easy peasy. 73-80 inner fenders next after the camber and toe get set next week.

Square Body C3500 steering shaft swap

Well after some perseverance we completed the installation. Looking at it, the new shaft was a bit short across the length of the rounded sides. A little squeeze on the flat sides in the vise a few times to correct the shape and it slid on.

Square Body C3500 steering shaft swap

I'm wondering why the Dorman C3500 shaft will not fit the column on my 81 C10. It measures correct on the double D end on the column and shaft but it only goes on about an eighth of an inch. Ideas? This truck has the original column and right at 20,000 miles on it. 250 6 cylinder MY6/MM7 4...

Detroit Speed Engineering versus UMI front coils.

The ride was good either way running the KYB Excel G shocks per the information here. I think the spring rating is near the same between the 2 companies. I did lop off half of the CPP LCA bump stop due to the Detroit springs having about 3/4" of clearance to the top hat for the spring before...

Detroit Speed Engineering versus UMI front coils.

I believe the DSE springs are near a 3" drop. UMI 2" just installed it's right near level and ever so slight rake. The Detroit springs though I was in the weeds. Loads of tuck on a 7" wide wheel.

Detroit Speed Engineering versus UMI front coils.

Just an FYI- Both companies have great products! The DSE front coils had the tires way up in the wheel well (probably a 3" drop) and I thought I'd try a set of UMI 2" drop springs. The rake was significant and I was definitely in the weeds with the DSE's. My 81 SWB does also have CPP...

81 C10 SWB: Tie rods and adjuster sleeves

My UMI sleeves just arrived Thursday. I'll add them later. I wasn't paying attention to both wheels when I assembled the new parts. I'd been work long hours and tinkering after laying in the gravel on plywood and carpet. Ha!

81 C10 SWB: Tie rods and adjuster sleeves

Thank you so very much for the explanation. This was in facty scenario. Mevotech parts in a Rock Auto kit complete with pitman and idler arms. Turns out that it was too hot, little sleep, and laying in the gravel at 45 years old (young brain tired body) had me all twisted! It's done now...

81 C10 SWB: Tie rods and adjuster sleeves

Picture for reference. In the photo the pitman arm is not attached but the tie rod assembly is fully collapsed (ends touching in the sleeve) and will not mount in the center link. I did order some UMI 2 inch springs and after a discussion with bluex, I ordered some short adjuster sleeves from...

81 C10 SWB: Tie rods and adjuster sleeves

Thanks for the reply. The rod ends are bottomed out in the sleeve. The sleeve has 3/8" on either end (3/4" total) before completely out of travel in the length of the sleeve. I could trim the threaded ends of the rods but it still won't be enough a proper alignment.

81 C10 SWB: Tie rods and adjuster sleeves

Replacement tie rods and sleeves match original on this 20,000 mile truck, but inners and outers touch inside the sleeves after lowering. (Detroit Speed & Engineering 950# springs, CPP UCA/LCA/modular spindles) I need more adjustments for toe in, as I'm currently unable to mount them to the...

    17 inch steel wheels- 81 C10 2wd 5/6 static drop.

Detroit Speed has a blue truck and I'd like to find the information on their setup. Looks to be 18 all the way around but certainly staggered set-up. Picture attached for reference.

    A/C options - 81 C10 Non A/C cab (LS Swap in progress)

Well, Old Air Products got my business today. Their responsiveness and cost hit the mark for sure. They were very helpful with compressor suggestions for my LS swap. We added a trinary switch for ECM to trigger dual SPAL fans on the Tejas shroud. Additionally I had to add the LS bracket for...

    A/C options - 81 C10 Non A/C cab (LS Swap in progress)

It is a Heat Only cab originally. Looks like the 12 volt AC is out. I'm not sure if I can find all the components to add the factory parts for A/C, as I'm not home enough to scrounge the wrecking yards. Ideas on how to find the parts I need? I had considered a complete kit. I am in the...

    A/C options - 81 C10 Non A/C cab (LS Swap in progress)

Need real world suggestions on the 3 companies - Vintage Air, Old Air Products, and Classic Auto Air. I am going to add A/C to our 81 C10 while I'm doing the LS swap and floorplans. I assume from the web searches and all of the YouTube University certifications I have acquired to date, that...
