There is not to much to know about piston and rod assembly except the big chamfer on the one side of the rod will go to the outside of the crank. The reason is that these new cranks have a radius and the chamfer is for clearance. Other then that, just have to have the piston dome towards the...

Having a heck of a time with crank end play, but think I have it, was no play, so removed 5th main (where the end play is determined) and sanded them on a piece of thick tempered glass, because it is flat, and cheap. Here are the piston and rod set up. Hate the double spirolocks, a pita to...

Journey of a Gen VI 454 Rebuild. Reluctor Ring Issue. Need help!

Big block crank are the same from 1970-2000, so any balancer will work, however they make several different od sizes. Find one that fits your budget, and quality standards. Make sure to install is correctly, NOT with a hammer. Here is a selection...

It's Thursday and had a little shop time. Block is clean now, and was able to install the crank and get it all torqued down. Got the valve covers back from the powder coater, and I like them. Was a beautiful day, pic off my front porch.

My mufflers are Holly Aero-Chamber, Headers are Flow Master 1 7/8 for a chevelle. It is what I orignally ran on the mostly stock 454. Exhaust is 3" and really like the sound of the system, and it's going to sound lots better with the higher compression.

Tomorrow is town day, and visit Mom, so probably not any shop time. The machine shop should have checked this, BUTTT, I am the one doing the assembly... Soo if you are doing this, check the cam in the bearing before installing the freeze plug, as that gives you easy access to the back bearing...

Some done today. Back cam bearing was too tight, unfortunately I had installed the crank. Fortunately the crank spun so nice , but I pulled it and was able to hone/ scrape in the back bearing. Also took some out of the second to back, as it was too snug. Anyway cam is now good. I did install the...

Post 454 rebuild and oil consumption

I run the thinnest oil I can, determined by mechanical clearances in your engine. I use Schaffer. Do not over fill the pan. I generally leave mine 1/2 qt. Low and watch my oil pressure. I go to great lengths to keep the oil off the crank, drilling two extra holes in the front of the block and...

What A 500 + HP Peanut Port 454 Looks Like

Always good to see you Mark. What cc are the pistons, 20? Also what did your static compression ratio come out at? Are you running a Moroso vacuum system?

    Looking for Mickey Thompson rims

I always ran US Mag Indy 101, they have 17X10, but I contacted them, and they were very responsive, and would put in any BC you want on any size wheel, Ex., 15X10 8X 6.5. The ones in the pic are, unfortunately, 16.5 X10, tires are 12.5X33.

    Magnetic Block Heaters, Gas Engine?

Do not know how cold it gets in Mass, but Rick is right. Mag heaters work somewhat, easy to install. Hose heaters work great if it circulates. Easy to install. Block heaters, in my experience work the best. On my 6.2 diesel, significant difference in starting with/ without the heater. It is a...

Busy, but not on this. However got the lifters in today, and told my wife this was like diamonds and ruby's to me. Cant wait to get some of this stuff together, and much of the tedious prep is done. Hope to install the crank, cam, and timing chain to see how everything feels. Hopefully it takes...

Put in the soft plug in the back of the engine, behind the cam, then back on engine stand. Deburred and checked the rings in the bore. Use a fine grit hard stone to deburr, and I did have a couple rings that needed burrs removed, which if not removed may cut a groove in the bore. Top .016 middle...

    489ci tow build...

E-Brock oval air gap intake, headers 1 7/8 tube for chevelle, short duration cam no more then 280 ([email protected]) 750 holly. That’s about $1000. Bucks and best bang for your buck. I had that combo and hauled 20 foot trailer with 3 1/2 tons of hay easy, total weight little over 8000 lbs……for years...

The engine brain cam in today, a few pics. In retrospect, I wish I had gone solid roller, less trouble with solids, and much higher lift. Disappointingly the Johnson lifters did not come like they were supposed to today. Cam is beautiful and should work good with this combo. I had to use more...

I also notched the block to help with intake shrouding, 1st two pics. For those that want to know, stay .06 off the top of the ring, and use your head gasket as a templet and scribe a line. I had hard stones on a die grinder, and finished with the finest cone I had, but pleased. Why? worth about...

Its Friday, and I had a good day in the shop. First two pics of the finisher ports. Cleaned the heads, and assembled. I blow the guides out with carb cleaner, air, then lube, assembly lube, and Lucas, as it is so sticky and stays on the stem. It is nice having the valves in, but cannot install...

    350 bearings questions

With the pan off like you have it, position any easier to get to rod at 90 degrees, unbolt cap and pull it off. install 3/8 hose on rod bolts if rods are stock, and turn crank another 90*, now you can measure. You will need help probably with reinstalling the rod back on the crank. However in...

Project is stalled. Cannot solve brake problem

Is this vacuum canister, or upgraded to Hydra-boost. If vacuum canister, is the diaphragm good? You have plenty of vacuum for a diaphragm system.
