Rough idle on factory initial timing

Just noticed you are in the Treasure Valley too! Incidentally, old Chevy 6 (62-74) distributors are lousy, Corvair's and Vega's had the same breaker plate set up that gets sloppy. You will see the dwell going all over the place (with changing RPM) which changes the timing as they wear. The...

Has Anyone Bought This A/C Compressor?

While there is lots of risk with the route I took, you guys are reinforcing the reason I did it. I can change the front seal myself if needed (already had the double lip seal) and did have to change the clutch to a Vee belt style. It's a shame when you stuff is so old and the OEM is 'out of...

Has Anyone Bought This A/C Compressor?

All new R4s are made by Compressor Works out of Dallas, IIRC. GM / Delphi sold off the tooling a number of years ago, thus all brands, including AC/Delco, have the same hit an miss reputation. There have been rumors of different 'grades' of them, or made on different tooling, but I am not...

    Caprice Evap System Concerns

Probably worth removing the valve and making sure the ports are clean and don't have carbon jamming them up. You can always disconnect the vacuum at the valve (plug the vacuum line) and check driveablity without it too. Just beware of severe detonation, especially when the torque converter locks...

    Caprice Evap System Concerns

That sounds a lot like excessive EGR, especially with your 2.56 axle ratio. My folks had a special order (GM employee) '85 wagon that felt like it had a misfire when it shifted into overdrive with the EGR active. Others with wagons complained of the same thing. I disconnected the EGR on my '84...

    Caprice Evap System Concerns

The mystery part is something that must have been added in the '86 model. Haven't seen that on the '84 / '85. I thought the evaporative system was already complicated enough! I had already replaced everything in the system on mine (except canister) because of fuel vapor / odor issues over the...

Anyone Seen a Smoking ECM Before?

Excellent idea on voltage. Alternators can also fail and put out AC along with DC, but they are typically noisy and very hot when this happens. I can tell you from experience that the power windows are really fast with 16+ volts too! That looks like it should plug into one of the A.I.R. valves...

Anyone Seen a Smoking ECM Before?

While I'm the first to be suspect of a remanufactured ECM, this is sounding a little suspicious. Service Engine Soon light and any codes? The correct procedure before replacing an ECM (according to the shop manual) would be to check each pin for abnormal connection to power or ground that could...

Anyone Seen a Smoking ECM Before?

I can't say I'm surprised, with the caliber of 'remanufactured' electronics, especially as obsolete as anything related to a vehicle with carburetion. They are so old now the electrolytic capacitors are due to fail too (probably all that is replaced in some remans). I recently (within the last 2...

    No clue what these are...

You have the two position, mixture control valve (different than the solenoid with full computer control - they are blue) circled. It defaults rich when inop, IIRC. I would probably hook it up if it was mine, but you probably won't be able to tell a difference.

It appears the one on the right is for the TCC. http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/chevrolet,1985,k10+pickup,5.0l+305cid+v8,1300105,electrical-switch+&+relay,auto+trans+lock-up+torque+converter+switch,4548 I was walking the junkyard today and thought sure I would find an example for you. Tip In switch for the mixture control valve in the Quadrajet. I was thinking TCC switch for the other, but that can't be with a Turbo 400, so it must be a 700R4. They would both had vacuum lines originally. Choke pull off gets full vacuum less than an inch from it. Front of the carb towards...

    A/C compressor

I would not use that compressor as-is either. It will not have the later, double lip seal on the main shaft. This seal did not appear until the late 90s. The good news is that it can be installed in all R4 and A6s.

Exactly, I may still do that too myself. I really don't like V belts anymore.

    A/C compressor

The evolution of the compressor names / parts division is kind of convoluted, and Delphi is no longer a wholly owned part of GM. All the Harrison division compressors are labeled Frigidaire from 1955 to the mid to late 70s. The Delco Air label is on the compressors through '82 IIRC. Harrison is...

    A/C compressor

The clutch assemblies can be swapped between serpentine and V-belt clutches on the later, light weight R4s, not the early style like this one; I wanted one of the last Delphi R4 compressors (GM sold the rights, all are now made by Compressor Works of TX, no matter what name is on them) to...

    R4 Compressor Troubles

I've found the sudden body leaks around the perimeter to be very obvious and wet, just like you were looking for. The main shaft seal leaks can be sudden without much to make them obvious, or they can be oily to very oily and seem to hold refrigerant for years too. Even GM said in the shop...

    R4 Compressor Troubles

Unfortunately, a fairly rapid refrigerant loss out the shaft seal or a o-ring body leak on the R4 are all too common. The good news is that the replacement double lip, shaft seal does a better job than the original single lip or ceramic (pre mid '84) seals ever did. I personally think a body...

"generator" light stays on while engine is running....

Disconnecting the battery in operation is supposed to be a no-no. Damages the alternator with the sudden loss of the battery in an attempt to bring the voltage back up.
