I don’t how I’ve not noticed in 7 years of ownership but the other day I was pulling my gas tanks and realized my passenger side fuel neck is recessed in the body but my driver side fill neck looks like someone hole sawed the body for the filler and just zipped 3 screws in to the hold neck.

Is this a factory thing? Or am I safe to assume my bed side has been replaced at one point?

It’s a 74 long bed btw.

Either the bed was replaced or the driver's tank was added.
I’m thinking the drivers tank was added cause I’m not seeing any previous evidence to body work being done on the bed

In the 70's, the standard tank was on the passenger side, so the driver tank was the optional one that someone would have added later on.

In the 80's, it was the opposite.

That was gonna be my next question! I appreciate ya dropping that knowledge.

There’s a riveted bracket on the frame that looks to be a fuel switch module to switch tanks. When I got the truck. There was no switch and no wiring to it. I’ll snag a picture of it next week as well

Mine had a dealer-added tank on the drivers side. It was fabricated out of steel plate, and had a drain fitting on the bottom. Filler connected to a hole drilled in the side of the bed. Switch on the dash was a simple DPDT swirch that changed both the tank solenoid for the gas and also the wire to the gas gauge.

That’s what I’m thinking this setup is as well

I’m only putting a single 20 gallon tank on the passenger side for the time being. I’m gonna save brackets etc so I can add the other side back in time

Wondering if my 77 add in tank is/was a dealer add on.
Sounds the same as yours. Complete with a janky hole cut in the wrong place to match up an OE tank.
