Anyone know how to disassemble this fender antenna?

I’d like to put this mount to use as a CB antenna but can’t figure out a way to disassemble it. I can see a couple spots on it where I could put a wrench but when I tried it seemed solid and I don’t want to break anything. My understanding is that this is a GM accessory and was most likely installed by the dealer when my truck was new so I’d hate to mess it up. I’ve got the windshield antenna for the am/fm but would like to put this to good use. Anyone else messed with one of these?

That big hex nut should be what holds the antenna body to the mounting bezel. It will be a fine thread pitch and might be a bit seized on there.

OK. Just wanted to know before I started turning on things too hard. There’s that large chrome hex and then further up just below the mast that little piece has 2 flats on it for a wrench. I tried turning both and neither moved at all. I’ll soak that large hex in penetrant and see if it loosens up.

The two flats are for removing the mast from the antenna body. It's likely seized as well. Trying to remove it will very likely break the little stud.

I though the goal was to just remove the antenna from the bezel, so a CB antenna could be mounted to the bezel.

Yes, the goal is to mount a CB antenna to the bezel. I need to get it apart so I can measure and make absolutely sure that what I order for it will fit. I guess I don’t even need to worry about the mast, just the hex nut to get the current antenna off the bezel. Now I just need to figure out what antenna to order. I saw a picture on here with something similar. Just need to figure out what exactly to get. I think something like this is what I’m looking for. This doesn’t use the big hex nut though.

If it were me I'd obtain the CB antenna and see what it comes with etc. It may come with its own cable in which case you can cut the existing cable and use the base parts that work with it.

1982 Chevy Cavalier antenna base is what I installed on my '82 Square. Drill two small holes on the inner lip of the fender and the larger hole in the top edge of the fender. There is your CB mount!

I got those in ratcheting box end wrenches.... like these. (really hand for dealing with GM style side terminal batteries without clearance for anything else)

@Gander ...not sure if it will help,..but to get the penetrating lube on,...you might want to cool the base with a cold gel ice pack.....and heat the nut with a stick lighter. ...before spraying. ...might give the spray a little more purchase area.

I have a 6 foot breaker bar too,... long fulcrum = less swearing even on little pain in the ass jobs like this (hold it to the wrench in with one hand, work the fulcrum with the other). (actually picked it up off the ground in a pick pull....like some nice people was picking rims,...and left the coolest thing laying there for me...= a piece of galvanized conduit 6 feet long, and oval shaped 3" x 2".) when I was using heavier galvanized water pipe, and shower curtain rods.
