I replaced my rockers, cab corners, above the bed fenders etc. When done wet sanding, I sprayed over the Maaco metalflake with Rust-Oleum 2X Automotive Enamel Custom Spray 5-in-1 Spray Paint, 12 oz, Gloss Clear. Total mess. Had to sand it off actually flaked off with paint scraper. The paint doesn't look bad but it needs shine. Will Spray max USC 2k High Gloss Clearcoat Aerosol work over metalflake? I don't want to repeat another mess. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DVWQ1BSS/

It's not a matter of the metal flake it's a matter of shooting a compatible paint over what base. What kind of paint does the truck have on it? And what kind of paint are you trying to shoot over it. Not looking for brands, looking for types.

I’m going to say pretty much any generic Amazon cheap spray bomb product isn’t going to be great.
But pretty much any paint or clear will bind pretty well to fully cured and properly prepped painted surface.
If it literally just flaked off in short order it’s likely more of a prep issue.

When trimming out my '87, I used Rustoleum Laquer clear over the High Teck basecoat. This was on the cab rear & bed front. When I jambed the cab & inside the bed I used Dynacoat Urethane clear. The difference in gloss was like day & night. Urethane clear for the win!

Yes, I didn’t mention that the rattle can clear will be **** for solids content and gloss and not able to be finished like real automotive products.
But I assumed that since it doesn’t match, he was just looking for something short term to cover up the patch work and make it a 50 footer.

I hit the back of the cab & headboard with the rattle can to seal in the basecoat because I knew that the ole paint gun won't a-fittin' when the bed was back on.
It didn't look bad UNTIL I hit it with the urethane in the spray gun. It's still not terribly noticeable because of location though.

That SprayMax 2K clear is used by body shops all over for quick and dirty cutting in and spot repairs. It's a 2K urethane clear, you have to press the bottom of the can and it ruptures a bladder or something that makes it a true 2 part paint. It only has a couple hour shelf life or so once mixed .

If the "base" you used is top coat able , I would use it. You can cut and buff it just like normal urethane clears once cured.
