Got a running 70's 350 to drop in for the time being from a guy in one of my local square body groups. Got it for the smoking deal of.... FREE!!! as long as I come down there and pull it. I'll be pulling it this afternoon and probably swap it in this weekend.

looks like the old engine just wasn’t going to wait for me to be ready

The engine is pretty much ready once I paint and assemble the accessories. I have all the parts to get the wiring harness finished and routed where it needs to go before firing it up and running it on a stand.

Transmission still needs to come apart and get inspected before I order parts for the rebuild. And I need to order the rebuild kit for the transfer case. I might just pull that now since the truck isn’t going anywhere anyways. Get the transfer out so I can machine the index ring on the adapter, clean and rebuild the transfer, paint it, and get the electronic vss sensor in it. I need to get the transmission parts ordered soon as they apparently can take a while to ship from the company I want to get them from.


You did that on purpose. Dont lie to me:bs::headbang:

I wish there was video... but it happened when I wasn't home. I had noticed that the ignition would turn without my key being in it a few days ago and hadn't gotten around to fixing it. My adopted pre-teen daughter got mad at my wife and decided she wanted to leave and ended up jumping in the truck and somehow got it started and floored until it went boom.

She's basically grounded for the rest of her life and hasn't been able to sit down for a few days.... she's gonna be doing a lot of the work on pulling these engines and cleaning stuff up too

Kinda reminds me...i let my oldest daughter, soon to be 7, who is more than half my height, (im 6 foot 5) Have a chance to drive the suburban in my lap. (I learned to drive in that truck also), shes tall enough if i move the seat up she can operate the pedals and steering wheel.... yeah well... first thing she does is stand on the skinny pedal and rack it to 5,000.....

Someones been watching dad too much lol.

Ok, so thats pretty wild then, i just thought it was a "start up dads truck and hold it to the floor in place" deal, was unaware it was actually stolen and dogged to death... ouch

Got the motor in the shop. Ran the numbers and it’s a 1972 Truck 350. Engine stamping was still in place, so it hasn’t been decked before. The plan is to clean it up, spray some paint on it, swap the newer parts I have on the blown up motor(carb, distributor, plugs, wires, water pump, fuel pump, harmonic balancer, roller rockers, valve covers, accessory brackets) and then stab it in. I’m still trying to decide if I should put the new radiator in at the same time, or wait for the 454 to go in. Hopefully I’ll get all that done and into the truck this weekend.

Yeah, I looked at a few options but ended up just sticking with the factory non-adjustable valvetrain. There were a lot of comments on forums and just in general about the adjustable valve train kits and roller rockers making a lot of noise.

Y'all need to go to rockauto.com and get yourself a set of Iridiums for about $18. ($45 - 5% and $3 per plug rebate)

Heard they make a big difference in the L29 engines. You can keep the .060 gap for more power or decrease it to .045 for a smoother idle but it loses power at higher rpm.

Those are the double platinum OEM plugs for the L21 engine... which is the CNP version of the L29. Those are the plugs I'll be using since I've converted to the LS CNP setup on mine. You keep the .060 gap and you get a smoother idle and still have good power up top because the individual coil packs have plenty of power to light that spark way above where the 454 tops out at.
