i thought it was late 80s, because firechicken and trans am owners always talking about how their low production quality car is better than the next guys and they are talking about 180hp to 185hp kind of thing.
I hear SBC quite a bit after about 85.
i know this because my cousin is one and he is also picture perfect the guy youd imagine is one

Copy pasted some website with formatting, it carried over.
307 yes I dont play with such pathetic displacements anyway, around here anything short of 327 except 283, 234, 288, and 250, 292, ... okay, maybe I do play with, but not the V8s!... that are pushrod... that are not 283.. that.. yeah.

307 is small, yawn.

I would say most likely a 225 v6 or a 350 buick. maybe 307. vin you could check? vin numbe r tells you those things. Any pic of engine? A small block buick will contain the distributor by the driver headlight corner, a pontiac, olds, or chevy will have it by the passenger door corner.a v6 in 82 MIGHT have electronic ignition but i dont think they got quite there in 82. by 1988 they did

Lol, well..... maybe I'll know tomorrow..... I don't have it yet, have not seen it in person, hell, have not decided if i want to buy it yet? Do know me well enough to know that at the right price, which I believe we will get to, I will buy it.... So I generally don't go look at cars and/or a truck until I know I'm ready to own it. I know nothing about a Buick other than I've always understood they are very good cars. Just looking for information to base my decision on, of which I truly appreciate ALL the information yourself and everyone else have provided. For the roundy round car it has to be "stock" which I have not completely figured out. Rules say, ford have to be ford, mopar, mopar and Gm has to be Gm, so??? can you put Chevy parts in a Buick?? Lol. Be a neat car to go hunt/ chase coyotes in!! Talk about a fun race!!

What kind of roundy round car? I have known a few guys that do that stuff. It seems to me, the 'stock' stuff is never very stock.

well simplest terms is yes. the only issue i could see off the bat is hood clearance assuming the engine sits further aft or fore, and the motor mounts probably dont just perfectly 100% bolt in. so you would have to slot over on the frame at worst, then some ps lines and radiator lines. all i can think of.

Edit: seems the impala and caprice of the time had the same body, tells me they should have SBC mounts meant for b body of the time. and the cars generally have lots of left and right fender room for stuff that modern cars cram on top of engines and stuff, so anything auxillary to the engine can be moved if needed. everything engine-only should have no issues.

here is a 1980 cutlass, not the same body but representative of full size gm cars engine bays after the 77 size reduction

the biggest engine choice of that year should only be taller iirc, pretty normal size

Little dirt tracks. We have one in Amarillo, Clovis and Lubbock. They have a class for "stock cars". Like said before it has to be ford, Gm, Mopar, course now it's Toyota, Nissan, etc... Largest engine is 350 cubic inches, 2 barrel carb, cant say the limits on the cam off the top of my head? Suspension has to be "stock" to the car. No glass, roll cage, fuel cell battery in the trunk, electric fuel pump...etc. etc.... Track may be a 1/4 mile ish oval? And the rear end has to be welded solid, no front wheel drive, can run a pickup. They have couple of classes of built cars, meaning its all built, divided up by cubic inches of the engine, and little sprint cars. The "stock" car seems like it could be some lower budget fun. Dunno??

I think the stock ones are budget friendly, but there's a lot of little tweaks and modifications that are done to a lot of areas of the car.

Mostly, I was just curious what kind of racing you wanted to do. A 2dr B-body being flung around a little dirt track sounds like it would be cool.

Thanks! Can't see where the engine compartment of that and what Im looking at would be much different. The daughter did something stupid that ended up her afoot, and I believe I'm a better Pappy for letting her walk a while. My guestion was for what I want to do with it, and with me that always ends up with a manual shift trans. But, I have also assertained that those old Buicks had some bad ass old engines?? Chances of me finding a Buick standard shift trans are slim to none, so do I need to go through the trouble? I have no problem with being wrong or ******* something up, just helps to know if I have a shot at success before I start!!

Yes sir. Exactly what I think. Maybe, just might, maybe, see if one could get away with bending a rule? Just a tick, don't cheat are anything, but win......Grin.

No, No, and I agree!! Why I cant find a 80's Nova to do it with....Id have to put it back. This old car has hail damage and a couple wiskey dents and drunk bumps, so we ain't loosing much. Why I'm not using the Sprint in the back yard for it, and it is prob a better platform. Hell, prob wind up hauling the old thing with the Sprint, just for the ****'s and giggles!!

Yes you wont be finding many BOP mated to manuals... hardly even chevys in comparisonn to ford or others... sadly.. i know the t-50 was used in al ot of olds cutlass but as far as buick goes.. not much. luxury brands usually meant auto immedatiely.

As a B-body guy, I'm still excited to see what the OP has, but the original choices are not good. Base is the 3.8L (231) Buick V6, with electronically controlled Dualajet. There is the optional 4.1L (252) Buick V6 with electronically controlled Quadrajet. This one blows head gaskets. The V8 choices were the Olds 307, again with electronically controlled Quadrajet. There is also the possibility of the 5.7L diesel. Automatic transmissions available were 200s, 250s, and possibly a 350, all with lock up torque converters. The V8s were also available with the 200R4 automatic. Not sure if a 4 speed automatic was available with the 252 V6. I've only seen one of them, and it was in a Park Avenue (technically a C body)! I wish I had taken pics, it was so odd and complete. The 252 was a 'credit' option in the PA and DeVille over the base engine. What an odd concept.
Chevrolet power was only available in the Big Cars from Chevrolet and Pontiac by this era, though Pontiac doesn't have a big car at all for '82. The Bonneville name had gone to the G-Body and the Parisienne didn't appear until '83.

Appreciate it. Didn't know anything about the electronic carb.....nor have any idea what one is?? As it goes, I also know nothing about auto transmissions....except if I own it it's broke?? If it's not a royal pain, what is a B Body? C body etc????

You are welcome!

B bodies were RWD Caprice/Impala, Catalina/Bonneville (except 82 and later), Delta 88 and LeSabre.
The C bodies were RWD (through '84) Olds 98, Buick Electra/Park Avenue and Cadillac DeVille.
