Is this radio original?

I might actually sell it if its worth that much since it does work very well.

If you can get a model # and find what it is correctly connected to.....if its a high end car, the guy restoring it will want it. Hope you hit paydirt!

Not a GM thing at all, But that is a common area for people to put radios as there are already holes for the HVAC ducting for a/c trucks.

Seeing that radio like that made a dim light come on in my head, was your truck before you bought if for sale along with a white horse trailer of the same vintage? Almost 100% remember a yellow 74 GMC in Illinois for sale and almost 100% that the radio was mounted like that.

Keep it. You sell it you'll have holes to fix and another radio to buy, which will most likely require cutting up the dash to install it.

I did not buy it with a horse trailer, but the guy who had it before may have (he didn't have it very long).

The truck has spent its whole life in Illinois as far as I know.

I've replaced both of the doors and the whole front clip.

So if you were going to buy it, you didn't miss out.

Yeah you can clearly see where the radio was supposed to be mounted.
Then a cover plate was made up to cover that hole and mount the ammeter.

Either way, the mounting of both looks to have been done well. I still think its really cool the radio is still a tube and still works. I can't remember the last time I saw a tube radio that works.

Actually the cover plate was factory since the truck never originally came with a radio.

The guy who owned it before cut a hole in the plate with a hole saw in order to fit the gauge.

Looks like there was an issue with the ammeter and someone clipped the wires. I prefer volt meters myself.

If it was worth $200 I'd sell it so fast and get a filler patch, or cut it out and put a modern radio in there so fast!

Fun fact, my 79 spent the first part of it's life in Granite City right above Venice, and traveled the McKinley Toll bridge (when it was still a toll bridge) over into Saint Louis.

The radio is an AM/FM Mono radio.

I recently realised, though, that it doesn't show up on the build sheet, and it is in a location that I haven't seen any other square body radio in.

It also still uses TUBES.

'74 is a bit late for that isn't it?

It just doesn't look out of place at all though, so I thought it was original.

Have any of you ever seen a radio in this location?

NO, that's not OEM at all. However, it's not a bad place to put a stereo if you have a NON AC truck. IIRC, I've even seen Cobra CB's mounted there.
