Hello all,

Personally...

I'm Kurt, I'm 42 years, married and have a great daughter of 13 years and a great son of 10 years.

Although I'm living in Belgium / Europe, I was always passionated by US cars. Mainly due to the fact my father always drove US cars. So during my life, I saw many cars passing by... 1979 Plymouth Volare 4door, 1979 Chevrolet Malbu, 1980 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 1977 GMC Motorhome Eleganza II, 1987 Chevrolet Suburban R10 5.7TBI.

Finally the rebuilding of my house is almost done, so I can find time to start working on my 1986 Suburban. I bought it 2 years ago as a second car to tow my caravan (camping trailer) but did not had many time to spend on it. So many ideas grew, but were not all realised yet.

I do hope to learn a lot from you guys/girls and from this forum and perhaps my posts can contribute to other new members in the future.

My Suburban...

is a 1986 C20 in, what I like very much, 2-tone brown/tan. Some like it, some hate it...
Neverless, for me a square body Suburban always had "something magic". It was US, it was big, it can haul anybody to any place... It was designed in a time when anything was possible.

Although I really like to drive it, it can use some improvements to meet up a little bit about today standards, especially on performance, fuel consumption, comfort items, finishing, ... or just to make it more practical for my personal family use.

Based upon the chassisnumber and RPO codes I found already some basic stuff of my Suburban.
Position 1 Country Build 1 => U.S.
Position 2 Manufacturer G => General Motors
Position 3 Make 8 => Chevy MPV
Position 4 GVWR / Brake system (pounds) G => 8001-9000 Hydraulic
Position 5 Line & Chassis type C => 4x2 Conventional Cab
Position 6 Series 2 => 3/4 Ton
Position 7 Body Style 6 => Suburban
Position 8 Engine Type M => 5.7 - V8 - Gasoline 4BBL
Engine produced in => U.S.
Position 9 Check Digit X => X
Position 10 Model Year G => 1986
Position 11 Plant F => Flint (T&B) - MI
Position 12-17 Production Sequence Number 161694 => 161694

It has the LT9 engine with GVWR of 8600 lb. , THM400 3-speed and rear axle ratio of 4.10 .
But can somebody tell me if my LT9 engine is the 185HP version or the 155HP California version ?

Thank you.

Kurt.

Thank you all for this warm welcome !

@ Honky Kong Jr, Why are you so sure my LT9 is 185 hp ? GM tech data & the 1986 sales brochure clearly specifies 2 different possibilities for the LT9. So I was wondering how I can see the difference ? Thank you gor your advice.

I read it but now I can't find it again. All I'm finding now is 160hp but what I read was in 86 it got 25 more hp and torque. I'm not done looking and if I'm wrong in what I posted I WILL admit it.

Decode your v.i.n. Post up the letter or number that designates engine and we can go from there. There is a vin decoder on here somewhere or google your model and year vin decoder.

Is the emissions sticker still under the hood? The engines with lower horsepower were used in California vehicles with a GVWR rating over 8500. The bottom of the sticker should say if it's a California or a 49-state vehicle.

(slightly off topic) I find it both amusing and disturbing that a guy from Belgium can communicate in English better than many of our U.S. members.
