You could get a repro spec sheet for it and see what the original color was, but I wouldn’t put much stock in previous owners claims.
I’d also say it doesn’t matter. Sweet truck! But it doesn’t look like any other fleet red fire truck Chevy I’ve seen.
“Made for fire marshalls” sounds like a made up story.

I had a dukes of hazzard lunch box, that started in 1979
(which "may" have been a chevy hugger orange, ...or a tnt express color,...or whatever the car supplier whipped up for what they would in the near future need "much" of ...as they wrecked them for our amusement/ sadness)

you should take a look at the paint inside where no sun has ever beaten on to see what it looked like when new.
(so maybe the low dash, or under the dash,...inside the doors ) ...after about 47 years,...looking pretty nice on the outside though.

I found this for 1979 detailing Tangier Orange on 1979 trucks,...although the cardinal red could have lightened up over time to orange....or it got a respray sometime,...or it was just painted originally lighter than the "red" on the card ???

I was just noticing on the card the darker red on the left: 70 is Carmine.
...Not 70 Cardinal like on the list for the Motorhomes and step vans and (that printed in text, without color swatch chips)

vs. the plain #73 Red in the middle of the card

Probably need a Ouija board to ask why? (I mean,...I have one from that times prior to 1980, but I doubt I am going to get anything from digging it out).

My 1975 K25 was originally Moss Gold but was repainted sometime prolly in the 90s to what looks similar to that orange. Not a great quality paint job and not well taken care of prior to my ownership. It's very faded now.

I was told by previous owner that this color was made for fire marshals. I've never seen another square in this color, and it is 100% factory original. Well, not anymore, but this is what color it was when I bought it. The previous owner put new doors and hood on it and the color he used was called "Atlas Red," which matches pretty damn well. It's an orangeish-red, more orange than red, though.

Kind of hard to tell in the picture - my monitor is ready to die - but I have seen what I think this color is.

The one that always cracks me up is Chevy's Hugger Orange was also Pontiac's Carousel Red.
And, very possibly, Old's special order Rally Red #73
