Put an MSD streetfire street fire distributor on your list. Read the directions that come with it about setting up the curve and the vacuum advance.

So can he go with option 1 or 2? If so, which option is better?

Using another quadrajet from a non California spec. 700r4 truck with an MSD street fire is the simple route, but finding a good quadrajet might be pricey or hard to find. But it will bolt right on and hookup just like what's on there, but no computer. You'll have to ignore the electrical connection for the dual capacity accelerator pump but that's it. Holley and Edelbrock are easier to tune and tweak but will require mods to adapt and although simpler to tune, will require some tuning and don't have the same range of adjustment so it's a how much do you want to learn? The quad really should run without anything though provided it was right when you got it. It's already calibrated for your engine. The streetfire is real easy.

Thank you for this information. I'll reach out to @Doppleganger or @custodian like you suggested and see what they have and go from there. I'm sure I'll be asking more questions.

You can also just use a GM stock distributor, anything for a Chevy with a vacuum advance. The CCC distributor controls the timing by computer, which is why you need to replace the distributor.

There are about 100 combinations of stock GM HEIs so yes you could pick one and get lucky or pick one and get lots of pinging and have to retard the timing to the point you lose power and gas milage. The MSD streetfire seems to work good with minimal work and comes with everything you need to tailor it. SirRobynO and I both fought random factory HEIs,no power when tuned to not detonate, others have had good luck,so random HEI is a crap shoot.

I may have an ECM harness from a 1986 Scottsdale. I don't know if they are the same.

California truck,ccc carbureator?
No Cali truck. All I know is I took out the ECM wiring and tossed the carb but may have wiring still.

Too big of risk should be Cali only and without seeing the carb I'd be scared.

Make sure it has the connector for the throttle position sensor, otherwise it is not the right harness
