Hey brah...if you go 4l80e youll need the tci standalone controller ($600-about half the cost of the other ones on the market) youll need a throttle position sensor for your carb if thats what you have (runs about $130) and a little black box to convert the mechanical speedo to electronic signal...which is about 330 dollars. Then you just need trans. Move crossmember ajd may have to cut driveshaft depending on what you have

Hell, I'd go with the 4l80e with a manual valve body just to skip the electronics bit. If money wasn't an issue though, all bets are off...

Everyone told me that too but damn, whats the point of getting an automatic trans if you have to shift every move mechanically lol

so where does this conversation stand? Im long term planning on a new transmission. I currently have a 1990 TBI 350 sitting in my truck now with a 700r4 and NP208. That trans ever goes id like to stick with automatic and OD. is the 4L80-E gonna be the best/easiest swap in or what about the 4L60-Es? I know the 60 vs 80 is strength rating but Im not pulling a camper. Once in a blue moon ill test the weight rating for fun. Is there any fuel effeciency differences between the two? I don't know much about the 90s trannys....would my ecm control it with the proper chips?

the 4L80-E would be best, but not the easiest, in fact of the reasonable options, it's the hardest and most expensive.

The 4L60-E is just as hard as the 4L80-E but cheaper, and is equal in strength to the 700r4 so if you going 4L60-E, may as well just keep the 700r4.

Project is currently stalled. I can't get the truck in my shop (IF I remove the mirrors I have 2" to spare) and it is too damn cold and wet out there to play in this muck. Also, I took a big pay cut when I took this job so the funds aren't there right now. Fortunately, momma's about to start working again for the first time in about 12 years so money may come into play again by fall.

I'm running 4.11's with stock sized tires and don't see the point in putting anything bigger on there. If it were 4x4 I could see doing a small lift and some larger tires but that looks doesn't work for me on 2wd.

Right now, I'm hoping to be able to pull the motor this fall (since I don't drive it much in the winter) and rebuild it. I may go ahead and just rebuild the TH400 at the same time. I like the idea of trying to get ahold of a TBI setup so I can do away with the cold start issues but I have basically given up on my grand plan of trying to make this a fuel mizer.

If I can find a deal on a 350, I may look into getting that and doing a rebuild on it and swap it out instead of rebuilding the 454. If I do that, I'll see what I can find for a 4l80e.

I really like the idea of the 454 but feeding the pig is troublesome. If I decide to change the engine, everything is up in the air and fair game. Since I can't buy parts now, it's just a waiting game.

I don't post here as much as I probably should but the truth of the matter is I am but a lowly learner at this point without a lot to contribute. I do, however, go through every new post every day. I have learned a lot in the time I have been here but that has also led to my confusion of where I want to go.

If I were to take the time to write down the things I would like to do to this truck today and compare it with what I posted when I first got here it would probably be good for a laugh, but it is all part of the process.

You asked what time it was and I built you a freaking watch. Any other questions? :)

Hotrod I know that much. I just mean if I swap proms will it run off my current ECM? What other electronics are required then?

I guess the better question would be....what all components are required?

Transmission
Wiring to ecm
Prom
And adaptor for Np208? Or should I pull a new transfer case?
Speedo function?
any sensors or cables?

I'm gonna search for a thread on installation when I get home

Edit
after looking around I'm debating just grabbing a 4L60 to rebuild. Or is a 88-90 700r4 better? Im looking for an easy swap in. I've never opened a transmission so this will be my first build. Currently the GMT400 series are over stocked at my local pull it. So parts aren't an issue in that department.

New here

I have a 1985 k10 4X4 that came with a 700r4 tranny which is now shoot. I would like to put a turbo 400 out of a 1978 3/4 ton 4X4. I only use the truck for plowing snow in my own drive way. I was hoping someone could tell me 1 if it's possible. 2 what adapters would I need. 3 how much of a pain it would be. I don't weld but I can wrench. I also don't know much about tranny's or 4 wheel drive systems. Thank you for any help.

This is question I have wondered myself. If ever swap out transmissions, I would put a 4L80E in before anything else. I would love to have an OD in my truck.

Sure it can be done. You'll need to use the Tcase that came on the Th400 and driveshafts will be need to be resized.
You could get by with the using the same Tcase and the same driveshafts if you used a Th350 and the spacer.

Pretty sure I'm going to eventually swap in a 700R4 into my rig eventually. It'll handle what I do as my truck is 99% street driven.
