oil pump fail

yesterday I started my 454 and it lost all oil presser after start shut down and pulled valve cover had oil every where pulled oil sender had oil running out of block . so did the oil pump just stop working all at once?? ordered a new oil pump and pickup (hi volume) I will drop the pan tomorrow and change the pump out and see what it dose . hine sight should have changed the pump out when it was on the eng stand :Insane:

Do the big blocks use the same style plastic collar on top of the oil pump drive that the small blocks use? I seem to recall someone making a steel replacement for them, as it wasn't unheard of for them to get brittle with age.

Yes they use the same from the factory, and they do end up in the pan, you find out when you pull the distributor and you hear that horrible thud when the drive hits the bottom of the pan, lol..

Did you tack the pickup they are known for falling off the 454s
Tacks are known to break too, I always safety wire the pickup never lose one that way.

I like the Melling "Select" pumps with bolt-on pickups.

day I pulled the pan and pulled the oil pump out tested it on the bench and pumps the hell out of oil in a bucket pickup is still on the pump put in a new pump and pickup put it all togather and still no presser at the gauge pulled the filter and it pumps out the filter put a bypass hose on it is a gen 6 454 oil cooler lines to the oilpan rail just in front of the filter I am lost now

I have 2 gauges 1 electric 1 mechanical if I take them out I don't get any presser out of the hole in the block
