Newbie here,need help on tranny selection.

Rebuilding 87 with stock 350 for my son. It had a 3 speed but going back
with a 700r4. It will have a carb on so i would like to know what year tranny
i need to be looking for. Thanks and would appreciate every ones ideas.

The best would be a 92 unit, also referred to as the 4l60. Later models added the "e " to the identification to indicate electronic control...which can be used with a carb, while utilizing a controller. IMO, the E model is best, especially from a longevity standpoint, as you have the controller taking care of line pressure, and shiftpoints.
As far as Carbs, Q-Jet, or Holly are best. The only Edelbrock that is worth a darn, are their remaned Q-Jet units. Stay away from the normal Eddys, as they have a bunch of design flaws that will just end in headaches later down the line.

My thinking was the 4l60e would not work with out the ecm. Since im not doing fuel inj.
I have a rochester Q-jet to put on. With that,thats why i was looking at the 700.

Yes, but there is a controller available to use the E Trans with a Carburetor. Just throwing that out as an option. Oh yeah, you will need a lockup kit as well.
