How and where do you jack up engine when replacing motor mounts ?

I don't have an engine host so i'll have to jack it up from the underside. I'd rather not jack it up on the oil pan as i may not be strong enough, even when supported with a wouden block. Would the torque converter be a good place?

A jack under the oil pan with a WIDE block of wood is perfectly fine.

Do one mount at a time, that way the motor doesn't move around - just the side you're changing goes up.

I would NOT jack it up by the converter, nor would i jack it up by the tin or plastic converter cover.

oil pan is fine with a 2x6 or 2x8 piece of wood. if you get the weight on the outer edges of the pan you will be fine. highdesertranger

Jep, I'll 4th or 5th it. Oil pan with a block. Just make sure it's a long enough block to go out to the edges of the pan to support it all the way across the pan and not just in the center. A 2x6 about 10 inches in length should do the job just fine. Even a 4x4 will work.

That's weird. I've always used the balancer...
Cold day I start jacking on an oil pan!

May have to remove transmission mount to achieve enough of an angle.

Beware distributor cap to firewall clearance.

Thanks for the replies. Fedex just mailed that the parts will be here on friday and added a bill for customs clearance :( so 'll give it a go next weekend.

...Even a 4x4 will work.
A 4x4 is always ok in my book :cheers:

I use two 2x8s nailed together, so essentially I have a 4x8. That way I get a lot of surface area, and they won't split, like a single 2x sometimes will when used with a floor jack..

Well. On my 87 K5, jacking on the oil pan just lifts the whole truck. Transmission mount nuts removed. What helped me in changing my mounts today was jacking near the mount one at a time. I stuffed a 10" 2X4 between the block and the stock manifolds. Worked great. I'd say this was my vibration problem since I purchased the Blazer 6 months ago. Rah.
