... not sure if interchangeability is a real word but.... i have 6.5 that is dead. I can get a 6.2 long block with heads. I was thinking could i just change over all the 6.5 parts to a the 6.2 block? Anyone have experience with this?

i have a 6.5 long block in my 82 c10 and everything else is 6.2?.. the only difference i can find between the 6.2 and 6.5 is injectors and bore size........

if its a stock black block gm 6.2? they have bad cranks and the web around the third main journal in the block cracks.......

thats why i have a 6.5 short block in my truck.. better casting block and they fixed the crank cracking there,, but then again it depends on the year of the 6.2.......

You are supposed to be able to fix the engine balance problem with a new fluid damper I read somewhere.

From what i have heard, everything external, induction and exhaust, accessory wise swap just fine.
I know most peoples money be funny, but if I was in your boots, I would find a way to get an upgraded, new 6.5 from bostic motors...even if I had a "good" 6.2 ready for install. These are the same upgrade engines that the military is using in the hummers.

Can you say Fabrication?
if you have the equipment, i say go for it, but cost wise, it may be in the same neighborhood of the upgraded 6.5.
With that said, you might as well get out of the 6.2 what you can until you save the money for what you really want to do, if you dont mind the extra work...at least the truck wont be down too long that way.

I totally agree. I'd sure look hard into a Non Electronics Cummins conversion for that kind of money.

Very true... tomorrow i am going to go down to my local napa to see if they rebuild diesel motors. See what i am up against. The last got quoted me around 5 K. I can get a military take out from teds trucks for 1900 bucks... i just have to transfer all my accessorys over.

$950 would be a good price, and those Military take outs are usually very low mileage, like 20K-50K IIRC.

And they may be the newer beefed up replacements.

I'm thinking maybe not. I have a feeling that is why they have the Military pull outs. They pull them out to better upgraded units in. Not sure on the letter VIN codes, but as said above, its the J motors and there are 2 VIN codes for the TD's. Is that the better one??? For $950 low mileage, I'd do it. For $5 K, I'd find me an old Dodge and do a Cummins swap.
