ok to make a long story short I own a c30 but want a 4x4. I found another pick up near my house that a gentleman will sell me cheap. it's a mid to late 70's 4x4 with a bad manual trans. I'd prefer an auto. can I swap my th400 from my 2wd truck? I planned on swapping my 454 to the 4x4 too. im not sure what t case is in the 4x4. my final goal is to make one good truck from the 2.

Anything is possible. To keep it factory-ish you would have to change the output shaft in your trans. I just had a spacer made to go 2wd fixed yoke to a 208.

Google images... lots to learn look at pics.

You will also have to remove the tail cone piece, and disassemble the tranny. Youtube can help. Have no fear, T400 is one if not THE easiest auto transmissions to rebuild. Don't need special tools or a Doctors degree.

My advice would be.. since there are many many people that prefer a manual transmission 4x4, I'd buy it cheap and put an ad on all the sales sites for a trade for an auto 4x4. Though I'm real curious, how does an SM465 go bad?

hotrodpc the trans itself is good but the clutch linkage is missing. I've had 2 blazers one auto and one had the sm465 I really prefer auto. thanks everyone for the info.

That linkage should be awfully hard to find if you decided to trade the truck for an auto truck. I know if I found someone near me with a like truck in manual trans, I'd trade my auto truck. Though, converting to Auto from a manual is much easier than converting from manual to auto. Just remove your clutch pedal and install and aftermarket shifter and you're good to go. You can get a nice shifter that has Park/Neutral safety micro switches, back up light micro switch and light gear shift indicator included. You just have to go through the wiring to get it all right but it's not all that hard, just time consuming.

thanks hotrodpc. the guy actually bought the truck I'm getting, just for the linkage and the dash pad to fix another truck of his lol. I specialize in automotive electrical so no worries there but I don't know much about trannys. I can pull one just nervous about the output shaft. I may just try to find a used 4wd th400.
