I haven't read through all this so forgive me if it's been mentioned already. The NP208 requires the TH350 have a longer output shaft than what the 203 and 205 used. That's the very most important part. So if the trans had a 203 or 205 attached to it, you cannot use a 208 without swapping in a longer output shaft.

The NP208 is an Aluminum case correct, but the same as a 203 I doubt it... 203 was Chain, 205 I believe was Gear-To-Gear and 208 is Chain?

Ya. The 203 is iron case, chain driven full time, the 208 is aluminum cased chain driven but it's not full time. Intended to be more "energy efficient".
I think it has a better LO than a 203 too, that what it evolved into.

Ofc the 205 is iron cased GEAR driven. Way different.
There's nothing wrong with a 203 OR a 208.
Both are very competent boxes.

I thought the 208 was used much more extensively than this thread would have you believe, up until the 241was introduced in 89? 91? Whatever year the differentials changed. Not sure (91?) but it was the stock box in my '88, mated to a 700r4 originally.
And I thought it was sold behind turbo 350 transmissions THROUGH 1986.
81-86? Lock up trans? but different sources give different years/applications because obviously it was widespread in the 70s, probably used since 1973?. I think the 205 was mainstay before the full time box showed up. (Smog engines) Somewhere I guess the mount/spline changed (cat convertors) but Im guessing.
Making 87-91 adapted to 700R4 until the box was phased out for electric
The 241 had electronic speedometer jazz in it....
Two versions of np203 I gather.

That is WAY past what I know about it. And I likely dont even know that.

Sounds good though!

Called Barry this morning and offered $500 for the trans if he wanted to sell it.
Said he'd call me back.
Ok.-click!
Few minutes later he explained it has not been separated, but he'd take $500 for it. "When can you come get it?"

I'll be out tomorrow Barry, I work tonight and dont got time today.

"well, what time do you get off?"

6am sir, I'll call you after I wake up. ;)
"Oh "

Sounded like a cool dude...
Cross your fingers!
60,000 miles? It may be okay...worth finding out compared to $2,000. AND THEN my ish will be correct. -er
More correct anyways

I think it should bolt in to what is present AND i'll get to ditch the 2 inch spacer because it is a 2wd trans now?
It's not covered in mud and is painted...that is not a picture of a 44 year old transmission.
We will all find out together!

Wonder if it will fit in the back of a Civic? - WITHOUT making a mess! LoL!

You got me on ignore now? Lol

The output on that trans isn't long enough to mate up to a 208 case. It's too short.

Not sure if you need any other info...hard to follow the thread.
The np208 was used behind the TH350, TH400, 700r4 and SM465.
Difference being the spline count, 27 on 1/2 ton and 30 on others.
The np241 started in 89 with a mech speedo and went elec for 90-91 with right hand drop. In the K5 and suburbans.
Later years the np241 went to left hand, eg GMT400 body.

My 82 k5 came factory with a 700r4/NP208, first year for the 700r4 in a square.
I think the pickups continued with the TH350, TH400, and SM465 until 86.
I know 87 was the first year for the pickup to receive a 700r4, at least in 2wd.

Yeah, a longer shaft would be needed. Unless someone makes a short spud shaft that is 27 spline male on one end and 27 spline female on the other end. But I've never found such a thing.

You could very easily bolt up a 203 or 205 to that trans, but then you would need the shifter to go with it, a flat style crossmember, and modify your drive shafts. All stuff that I'm betting you're not wanting to do.

Your new name is "Buzzkill". You should change it <<<.
Just sayin....lol

Really want out for ANOTHER $1000.
I CAN.NOT. justify a $2,000 transmission install because it is rated to 500 hp .
Go ahead and put me down. Don't reckon the new shaft installs from OUTSIDE of the case..

I had already bought a convertor and everything...

https://www.jegs.com/i/TCI/890/242125/10002/-1

$350 worth of junk to add PLUS fluid $70?
PLUS the $250 kit @TubeTruck linked?
Pay some ******* trans guy to install it.
THEN I gotta pay some OTHER ******* 3 or 4 hours to put the trans in the truck.
Not gonna make it for $1000.
Not even gonna hit 1500.

Got six grand in the PRIMERED truck with Suburban fenders. So even if I fix it to sell it for more...i'll not break even.
