I'm going to piggyback off of this thread, if @mrdap doesn't mind. I've also been looking for one (within driving distance) so if someone happens to have two of them, I'd happily buy the second one.

They're not as heavy duty as you may think. Plenty of tanks have been dented with the oem shield in place, but to be honest I haven't read of any being pierced. The shields dent relatively easy as well as trap debris next to the tank.
Just my .02, throwing it out there.

If you're anywhere near Long Island I'm going to be parting out my '86 and it has a factory skid plate on the tank.

Thanks for letting me know.
I'm on the other side of the country so I would pay for the shipping.
But it's got to be the 40 gallon tank.
Not the 31 gallon tank It's a different part.
If you can send me the measurements of the skid plate, The overall length front to back,
And the height from the mounting tabs to the bottom of the skid plate
I can tell if it will fit
A few pictures would go a long way too.

Trust me, it's a 40. I've replaced it once and paid to fill it enough times to know how big it is.
