Is it possible to just use a shortened 2wd driveshaft over the normal "4x4" np205 slip yoke driveshaft?

There's not a yes or no answer for this one.

There were three different u-joint sizes, depending on the year and axle. Unless it's a shortbed, most 2wd squarebody trucks have 2-piece shafts with a center carrier bearing. And most, if not all, had a short style slip yoke, so you would need a long 32 spline slip yoke to also install on the shaft that you shorten.
