I am in the final stages of 79 k10 restoration just finished sandblasting the stepside bed. My question is I am going to epoxy primer bed sand and paint. When attaching steps and fenders that have been painted to bed I will use self leveling seam sealer but wondered if I need to put something where the metal to metal fender and steps attach. In the past I have used fender welting but its a pain. That is why I am going with seam sealer. Just wondered if I should use some type of foam or gasket for the metal to metal attachment as that was where rust presents in the past? Using stainless bolts btw.

The factory seam sealed them together then had a quarter round bead to keep debris out of the top of the mating area, you may need to blow the pictures up to see. This was a bed I took apart that I believe was never disassembled. Note the clear stone chip guard on the step.

Putting a foam gasket in there would probably make the issue worse honestly. Sounds like that would give moisture and dirt a place to hang out. Covering up that seam entirely would be the way to go

I think Mar-K in OKC sells a gasket for that joint. Fender welting-Current catalog-page 39 PN 120286 30' roll for $35.
