Here is my issue. I knew it had to be half way in reverse to put the top cover on and thought I had it. But, it will not shift into reverse. It is out of a 1967 C10. It will not go into reverse no matter what and now the cover only comes up half inch. Any ideas why I can not get the cover off and how to get it to come off? I searched the net and on here and all I can see is how to install it basically. No info on anything else.

If the reverse gear slid forward or backwards when you put the top cover on, maybe it's just bound up now?

Is the trans out of the truck? In the past, I've carefully "helped" the top cover lift off with a prybar. No brute force, mind you. Just some persuasion and some jiggling.

It was actually pulled out of said truck, resealed and reinstalled in a 51 Chevy 3100 with a 1959 Chevy Belair 235. It was a driving truck before pulled. I could have swore it was half way in reverse.

Last one I did, the reverse gear kept sliding on me. I had to get the trans perfectly level so it would stay in place for the fork to slip over it.

You have to find that "sweet spot" where it's not fully engaged in reverse. It can be very aggravating especially if the trans is in the truck already. Keep messing with it & it'll finally see things your way.
