I have probably asked this already but my memory is not what it used to be. I have a GM 12 bolt and wanting disc brakes. Thinking about getting a rear end out of a newer silverado. My mechanic buddy said that it will hold up to the small block 400 that i am using backed by a 700r4.

My question is what are yalls opinion??

Def not going 14 bolt or ford 9".

Your 12 bolt will hold up fine. You'll break he 700r4 before you break the 12 bolt unless it's just flat out wore out in need of bearings and been running without oil.

Oh i know it will hold up but kinda hesitant about spending 900 bucks for the disc setup. Im wanting to be as safe as possible. I seen on here about a cheap conversion but cant find the brackets for the conversion.

To hell with $900 for a conversion. For that price I'd geta used rear axle from a newer truck and move the spring perches.

I was gonna say, just hang out a bit and see if someone posts up for a location for cheap brackets. Looks like maybe Retro has the info for you. :waytogo:

What's the reason why you won't go 14 bolt is it the lug pattern. If so tm did make a 5 lug semi floating 14 bolt and a 6 lug. All you would have to is move the spring perches. However like mentioned earlier a need 12 bolt would hold up also.

The 5 lug 14b Semi Float is a tough one to find. Found in the GMT 400 454 SS pick ups. The 6 lugs aren't so bad to find, but then you just find you someone to set up the spring perches and I think your need to reverse the shock mounts too.

Yea I didnt want the bolt pattern. But the next build I plan on when I finish this one is going to be a k5. I found a guy that makes the conversion kit for the GM 12 bolt TRUCK axel. So Im just going to keep it and do an overhaul on it with new seals, gears, etc.
