If its still running, it must be a good 305. I wouldn't talk to bad about it. I am not a fan of 305's myself at all, but I know a couple guys that have them and close to 200,000 and they are still running OK, and actually doing a little better on fuel than the guys with 350's, just not as fast. Lets face it, these trucks are not good on mpg. As many as I have, I would like to have at least one that is decent on mpg and I was thinking about a 4.3 in one, but I was told the 305 gets about the same mpg as 4.3. I dunno how true though. I do have a 305 laying around that can be built, but I don't have a 4.3, then I'd have to get fan shrouds and blah blah blah, so maybe a 305 is the way to go. I even seen a 267 on CL I could probably get for $50 and it needs rebuilt. It would be a sled, but I wonder how it would do on fuel.

From what I heard the 4.3 is just a 350 with the back 2 cylinders removed.
EDIT: and the math pretty much verifies it.
5.7 / 8 = 0.7125
0.7125 x 2 = 1.425
5.7 - 1.425 = 4.275...practically 4.3 liter.

Yes its true. A 4.3 IS a 350 with 2 cylinders taken off the back. The pistons and rods will even interchange. So will all the front accesories and brackets. So then it comes down to, what will get better mpg. The smaller bore 305 with 8 cylinders, or the bigger bore 262 cu in. aka 4.3 with 6 cylinders. I really would almost like to try that 267 SBC. About the same cu in. as the 4.3 but smaller bore, shorter stroke and 8 cylinders. Therefore, I think it would have more torque than the 4.3. I would just like drive my squarebody and get 13-14mpg city, and 16 or 17 hwy. Currently my daily driver squarebody gets 8 city 12 hwy, and its a 454/Turbo400 C20 with 14b Full Float Rear end at 3.21 gear ratio and why it does that well on the hwy. But it does suck towing. If it had a 350 it would sure have a problem towing my 18ft tandem axles trailer with another truck on it. The 454 does pull it OK but you can tell its straining to do it. A 3.73 or 4.10 ratio would be much better, and I have both setup already in other rear ends, just want to keep as much mpg for now, and why I want to build a 1/2 ton with a small V8 to be the daily driver.

The 267 would have a slight bit more torque than the 4.3, due to the slightly longer crankshaft. Just like a 250 straight 6 has gobs of torque due to the heavier crank, compared to the V-6. BTW I saw a Ford with a 300 straight 6 kick everyone's ass at the race last weekend in the 4&6 cylinder class, sounded like it was revving 12k on the tach!

Nice CLEAN rigs, No pun intended. Mr Clean. That 85 paticuallarly sharp. Are those underrun pulleys? I assume it used to be diesel??? I have a couple of those trucks. Used to be a 5.7 Olds diesel, now a 350 Olds Gas, and my 85K10 was 6.2 Detroit. Easy to tell, the giveaway being the hydroboost behind the master cylinder. Unless its a 1 ton, they are also hyrdoboost from factory even if gas engines.

That 6.0 is gonna be purdy in an 80 squarebody. And you said you are running a 4L80-E with it??? Oughta be a pretty stout set up. Get you some 3.73 or 4.10 gears since you have have the OD and that thing oughta run like a raped ape.

Yup! Should be getting the 80e saturday. Thanks! The truck came with a brand new (200miles on it) detriot tru trac rear end with 3:73s :) I cant wait to see how it goes, everything I own has no balls....but Im always smiling ear to ear in my friends rcsb with 4:11s 3600 stall and line lock, so hopefully I will be smiling playing with this one!

I don't think it'll run like your friends truck with a 3600 and line lock, but it'll run nice and have some balls. You'll like the rear end too. Every which way but straight with both rear wheels spinning. Might have to brush up on your back steering skills. :grd:

You running a 700r4 or Turbo 350 with that?

Right now the 350 tranny is in it. I would like to move up to the 700 for the od. I may end up havin to if the old tranny doesnt perform as well as it used to when its hooked back up. This build has only stretched on for about 2 years now lol

What year is your truck XS? What gear ratio you running? 1/2 3/4 or 1 ton? There is nothing wrong with running a Turbo 350 and if you have a taller or mid gear in your truck, say a 3.42 or taller going toward 2.73, I'd keep the T350. You don't really need OD if you are running 3.42 or taller. If you can't get a T350 to perform like you want it, them swing by OKC and I'll massage that dude a little bit and you'll be happy with it when I'm done with it. The T350 is a tougher more durable trans the 700r4. However, the adavantage to a 700r4 is a deeper first gear and the OD of course. So there are 2 advantages to the 700r4. But, if its not built right and have the right upgrades, it won't hold up near as well as a T350 would right out of the box. I am getting ready to go out on limb here myself and build a 700r4 for my K10/20 But, I got the more desirable case to start with. 88-92 is preffered for a 700r4, and so it the K case which is common in the 4x4. Which amounts to a bit more metal around the bell housing area I believe all the K does for you. Its currently got 3.08 gears so I really don't want to go with the 700r4, but I am doing so, cuz I already have the 14bolt Full Float 4.56 rear end with Detroit Locker out of a CUCV but I have to wait til I get either my front axle regeared to 4.56 or find a Dana 44 set up for 4.10's already, and then I have a set of brand new 4.10 gears for the 14b Locker CUCV rear end. So yep, its a 85 K10 now, but going to be converted to K20 when I am all done. So I am going to try a weaker 700r4 this time, but I don't really care. I build my own transmissions and can break them if I wanna, and then I just figure out to make them stronger and try to break them again. Just saying for you, Don't be afraid to stick with that T350. Unless you are running a short gear 3.73 and shorter, I doubt you'd see any mileage change at all.
