Hello everyone. This may seem like a stupid question for most of you but I don't know the answer.

My NP205 is bad. Its in a 78 1ton 4x4 454 3spd.

My question is... are all np205's the same? can I get one out of an auto tranny truck and fit my manual with no modifications. I was thinking that there were "spacers/adapters" that were different that allowed them to be mounted to different transmissions.

I hope I asked this question correctly so everyone understands. If not please feel free to flame me and make me feel stupid as I am.

Thank you

John

Basically the 205's are different for each trans they're bolted to, both by input spline count and adapter.

I assume that when you say you have a 3 spd you mean it's a 4 spd with a granny low 1st gear (sm465) and not a true 3 speed on the column.

The good news is the pre '85 4 spd / 205 combo is extremely common so finding a replacement t-case should be both easy and relatively inexpensive.

And don't forget there is also the Racetrack Pattern where it meets the adapter, or a round pattern. IIRC, 85 and down are the more common Racetrack pattern, and 86 and up are round pattern.

I was thinking he meant 3 speed auto which is going to be a Th400 in a 78 1 ton, but you're prolly right and it's a Granny low 4 speed. If it is the Granny low 4 speed, there is also 2 different output shafts to consider for the SM465. There is the course spline IIRC, it's 10 spline, then there is fine spline matching either Th400 or Th350. Can't remember now if it's 27 spline Th350 or 32 spline Th400. Wanting to say 32 spline Th400. Not sure when that change took place, but I'm almost certain it took place BEFORE 85. So even though the 85 down will be racetrack, he'll still need to make sure it has the right spline count. ORRR, Luck out and buy a SM465/NP205 married combo at a good price.

Very sorry guys. Yes its a 4spd granny low manual or 3spd with granny low depending on how you say it. Very sorry. I just got home from going and getting a sm465/np205 combo but the guy flaked out on me at last minute for some reason. NOT HAPPY AT ALL!!

I knew that there was some kind of input spline differences but don't know how or what I am looking for when I am searching online.

Here is what happened. When I was driving it home the transfer case was making a chattering noise. If I lightly put my finger on the shifter handle it stopped. Then a couple minutes later it went bang and broke the output shaft for the front drive shaft. I took off the drive shaft on the side of the road and drove it home. So I figured the transfer case is bad somehow. I need to put a new flywheel on it and plan on putting a new cab/bed/fenders/hood on it so I figured I would swap the transfer case when I do that. I just want to make sure I have everything, correct, that I need.

Thank you guys for your responses!!

Sounds like some roller bearings came out of place and monkey-wrenched the front output. It's a shame you're a bazillion miles away I have one in the basement you could swap some parts around on and make a working unit, that is if I could be coaxed out of it lol

The race track vs round pattern is a before and after '85 thing, '84 and older is race track while '85+ will be the round pattern.

For 4 spd / 205 combos, the race track set up the 4spd will have short 10 spline output and the round will have a long 32 spline output.

4 spds were offered with the long 32 spline output in '81 but this was for the 208. This version will fit a '85+ round pattern 205.

For hand101, any '84 and older, race track pattern 4spd/205 combo will work. '85+ combo's will work but there are bellhousing and length differences.

There you go. That's the info and dates I was looking for. I sure thought it was 86+ though for the round. At any rate, if you stay 84 on down, your safe of not having a round pattern and it's the racetrack pattern you'd need.

Good Luck with that. You're looking for Hens teeth. Needing a Round Pattern NP205 huh??? With slip yoke or bolt on?

I would take either one just need that round NP205 for a NV4500 swap. It never hurts to ask right?

You're right. Just letting you know incase you weren't aware... They're a bit hard to find and when you do, you're paying for it. I'd like to have a round pattern NP205 for my A833 4 speed with OD.

Yep, you find one, you'll be paying for it. :insane: Kill 2 birds with one stone. :insane:Give your first born child. 1 less mouth to feed and have toys. :roflbow:
