Typically on a diesel you’d open the valve or petcock on the bottom of that filter housing. Water will be at the bottom fuel on top. Not sure what the protocol on a 6.2 is though. You may have to bleed the fuel system after. Not likely if the filter is between the pump and tank.

If you aren’t sure the last time it was changed, I’d just change the filter while you are at it.

Looks like an after market diesel fuel filter. That's not a factory 6.2 filter.

Your light may be on because the proper sensor didnt get put back together after changing filters. It possibly cant.

That looks like a Baldwin/Dahl 100 water separater/fuel filter.

There should be a valve near the tank and spring hanger that is designed to siphon water out of the bottom of the tank when the sensor detects enough water. My '83 k10 has that valve easily seen in front of the rear wheel.

Definitely aftermarket. definitely not a Dahl, although the T-bolt clamp looks similar. The color says Racor, but it doesn't look like any Racor I'm familiar with. There should be a secondary spin-on filter on the back of the intake manifold. I forget where the water sensor was as I haven't seen an '82 in a long time. But I would certainly look at the back of the manifold.

The water in fuel detector is in the tank according to the shop manual.

Makes sense. '82 was an oddball year and a lot of things changed. I think it was also the only year to have tank drains.
