I'd make sure to get documentation from the DMV or whomever in case you've been given bad info. The easiest would be to leave it alone and make a note of the mileage when the new engine goes in.

Any thoughts?
I think after a certain age, vehicles are not required to report mileage. My crew cab says "exempt" on that blank. It was last registered in 2010, when its title was changed to the heir of the original owner.

So, if I decide to install a new gauge to coincide with the new engine what miles do I report for inspection/registration purposes? 0 miles (on new gauge) or the old odometer reading?

You can tell the inspector ZERO because you put in new gauges. They will probbaly enter it as exempt because of its age anyway. DMV (DPS) won't even be part of the process.

This is how mine was done in October 2022 when I finished and the odometer read 0.0 on the new guages.
