Need advice building 383 please

Opened up the motor,discovered the cam and crank are junk.

Half the lobes are shot,and the crank has been poorly repaired by someone.

So now I want to build a 383.

This is what I have in mind,,

Wanna have a bullet proof 350-400 HP motor, Its going into a 85 GMC shortbox, the only thing other than the block I have is a set of Edelbrock performer RPM heads.

Been thinking,keep it under 10-1 CR and using a Eagle rotating assembly .

It will be MPFI . Havent decided on witch brand yet.

Cam selection havent even looked at yet.

The main thing Im looking at right now is what parts do I order to bring to the machine shop? From what I figure the heads are 64cc so I really dont know what pistons to order. Dont know if valves will clear,or CR will be too high.

Im sorry for the stupid questions,I coulda just ordered all factory spec parts but this is not going to be a stock rebuild and I dont have all the specialty tools or know how to do this properly .
Or I could order a crate,but that would probably take too long.

Isnt their a engine build chart for this info on here somewhere ?

Check out the piston selections at jegs, they usually have the expected static CR depending on the cc of the heads, and helps you pick how much cc dish/flattop/dome you need.

Valve train and rotating assembly are really 2 different topics but for under 400 horses Id get flat top forged pistons (just for reliability), a good used 400 small block crank. I don't recall the size of connecting rods anymore for a 383 o am sure someone here can jump on that one. The machine shop will have to machine the bottom of the cylinders for clearance. Most of valve springs will tell you if they require head machining or not. I built one 15 years ago and specs allude me.

use 6 in rods and a shorter piston. it gives more mechnical advantage from the piston to crank. also look into cam buttons. thats where you get more application specific power

if your budget allows, Holly Avenger multiport is the better choice.

Ok well change of plans,now were r not stroking to 383.

Jims86, That Holley Avenger set up is what the plan is.

Seems like a nice setup ,how many people run this system I wonder and how do they like it ?

Well folks, we discovered the 350 block was already bored 40 over and worn.
Now its junk I figure .
So I now have a 383 HP crate we ordered from ATC.
The Holley Avenger MPFS should be here next week I hope.
HP tranny should be in tomorrow.
Next I need to figure out what were gonna run for headers and mufflers. Im planning either an X Pipe or a H pipe set up as well.

As soon as I figure out how to post pics Ill post some up.

I built a 383 once and for what it cost after all the machine work and parts it was just about the same cost as that 383 crate motor. It's the way I'd go if I were to do it all over again.

Yeah you dont have to be a genius to figure out the cost ,plus like mentioned on other threads here your time is a real issue as well. Not to mention it seems like they have a pretty good warranty too boot.

Just curious if anyone has run this set up and what do think?

Seems perfect to me,being a short box with 380 hp and 460 tq,should move that baby pretty nice I figure.
