I have found two replacement transmissions. I don't much about these trucks so what trans would drop in with least work. Napa has a Sm465 and a NP833. This truck is a 2wd truck. Has a 700R4 in it now. I want to know what trans I should look for. I am going with the Z bar set up. I know the steering column will need swapped out and all the linkages collected. Bellhousing of course. I'm more concerned about the bigger stuff. Here are some links of what I have found for transmissions. As for the shifter I have found that summit racing has a hurst comp shifter. They say I need a 7 bolt side cover trans. Let me know what works.

1st of all a SM465 requires a high center hump which if your truck was always and automatic you don't have. The A833 has the same exact gearing as your 700R4. The shifter and linkages are special to our style truck. Even though it is a Hurst shifter there is not an aftermarket unit that will fit. The bracket bolted to the trans is very different and mounted higher to clear the speedo cable.

Have you looked at any saginaw 343's? It's a 3 speed, 7 bolt side cover like you mentioned. It came stock in my '86 c10, and I personally like it very much.

I'd like a 4 speed manual. Love to have a 5 speed manual but don't know how well that would fit in my truck. I would have to take the bench seat out, which I am planing on putting in bucket seats anyways. Now that I bring that up, would I have to modify my cross member to get a 5-6 speed in my truck? I do know the drive shaft will have to be custom of course. I would like to go with a tubular cross member. Lighter and stronger.

I'd give you the factory 4 speed tranny and bell housing outta my 73 for that 700R4 you have in yours, that's what I want in mine anyway...
