Hey im new i have a 1985 k1500. when the weather gets better here in washington going to put a new 350 or 383 stroker and 700r4 that can handle 450tq. my biggest concern with which engine to choose becuase of the transfer case np205. how much torque can it handle? Running on 32s and rearend is 3.73.

That transfer case is one of the strongest that gm used. That wouldn't be my first concern, the 700r4 would be. It is a very weak tranny in comparison with the others from that day.

Thanks for the respond im new to transfer cases and transmissions. so the transmission i will be getting is built to handle more than ill have im look for around 350hp 400 tq. i have no idea about the transfer case. i rarely will use the 4wd if its not engaged do i need to worry about anything breaking due to power if i choose to increase torque and horsepower?
what would you say the limit is on a np205?

NP205 will take what you can throw at it but you should post a pic of what's in your truck now, I'm betting it's an NP208.

205's are used in sled pullers and high hp boggers with way more power, you're not going to break it. You need to worry about the axles, not the 205.

OK if you're 100% sure. It's just that cast iron gear-driven 205s didn't come stock in an 85 1/2 ton, which I assume that's the truck you're talking about in the details under your profile info. They would have came with an aluminum cased, chain-drive NP208 but that doesn't mean someone didn't swap a 205 in.
