Can the needles be pulled for painting or does everything have to be taped?

they can be pulled. best thing to pull them with is a golf divot tool.

They are fragile and pulling them can cause damage and false readings. Just put a slit in a sheet of paper and slide it under the needle, then put tape on the slit in the paper.

That's what I was thinking. One of the needles felt like it was spring loaded, and if so, there's no way to pull it and get it back in the same location. Tape it is.
