Gas tank won’t fill

No, the tanks are not connected to each other.
That would be suicidal. Lol
But now you know that, switch the lines at the solenoid and pull gas from the full tank. Easier than siphoning out 20 gallons imo.

Our 77 has the same ptoblem. I made a tube and connected to a large funnel that hooks to the top of the side of the bed,
I fuel into the funnel with the pump nozzel.
Rust in your tank? Get a 250lbs fishing magnet from amazon and stick it on to the bottom of the tank.
This will grab most of the loose rust keepng it out of the filter.

Ok, I removed the filler neck. That’s fine. All the fuel seems to be sitting in the hose that connects to the tank. It’s blocked or something not letting the fuel get into the tank. I’m trying to remove that hose clamp but it’s not the normal hose clamp. It looks like a bolt that’s holding it on to a clamp. Any idea what could be the cause? I’m going to replace that part of the hose and see what I can see. Hopefully I won’t need to drop the tank. Pretty sure I will end up having to though.

If the charcoal filter gets clogged, this can cause a filling issue. Purge valve (on the charcoal can) could be bad. Fuel vapor okay, if raw fuel gets sucked in it will melt the charcoal.

If it gets clogged OR on trucks with the “high altitude emissions system” like mine there’s a in-line valve just ahead of where the tank selector is. Previous owner had disconnected all that and left it loose and hanging and drilled out both gas caps to vent. Since I didn’t know any of that I replaced both gas caps when I bought the truck and popped a line on one of my tanks because of the built up pressure. Without the clamps on, that “tank pressure control valve” couldn’t receive the vacuum required to open up, meaning that the tanks couldn’t vent to the charcoal canister and then on into the TBI, so pressure built in the tanks until it popped a line. Drove me crazy trying to figure out what was going on until I found out what the problem was.

Over the many years and many different trucks, factory and modified tanks, its the same story if the line is laying to flat. 18" long 4x4 with tapered ends, lay it down pull rear tire up on it tilt truck. One other thing to check is some trucks had a vent hose inside the fill hose that hooked to the inside top of filler neck and went to tank.

I think that was the problem. I think it’s the left side that’s working not the right. I only went by what the guy said. The cool thing is that it’s single degrees out with 10” of snow on the ground. The trucks been outside for about a week. Oh well. No pictures of the underneath right now but this is what I got.

Well, correction on the correction. It IS the passenger side that is the main tank. I filled the left side and it’s still full. The passenger side is less now. I went to put in a new tank selector valve underneath valve but I think he was the hoses incorrect. Taking off the bed won’t be helpful because the sending unit and stuff is under the cab. So looks like the best is to drop the tanks and figure things out. Going to be fun.

I haven’t done that but have noticed that anything that makes the filler hose less sloped makes fueling more difficult. The 77 is actually a bit easier to fill than the 86. But the 77 still has factory suspension rake where the 86 is effectively leveled.
I did try fill up on the 77 once where the pavement was sloped considerably, downhill towards the filler neck. Was about impossible and couldn’t just drive around the other side. Gas station was packed full of cars.

I've got the same problem. Replaced my tank, filler neck, hoses, and cap; just because I replaced the bed and it was all accessible. I believe the problem may lie with the fact that my charcoal canister has been eliminated by the previous owner. My vent outlet just goes to a rubber fuel line (about 3' long) that ends with one of those check valves commonly seen on the top of a differential. But, a vent is just a vent, right? So I'm not sure.
Anyone wanna weigh in on the charcoal canister thing? I know it's fairly common to do that.

It sure is nice over here on the Right side of the state. Just filled the 86 up for the fist time since dragging it over here. Standard old fashioned gas nozzles as far as the eye can see. So much nicer
