I thought the same with my 78... i was told 20 gal but from empty i only ever seem to get about 17 in it.
Yeah, but that could be a good thing. 20s with a reserve. :D

At least your gas gauge kinda works, though. I got nothing.
I will soon, though.
All new tanks, straps, senders, pumps, switch valve, etc.

While I was under there measuring, it reminded me why I bought it.
Despite the issues, shes a pretty solid truck. The rest is just details, right?
A few grand in parts, some paint, whatever. :D
I'm getting my chain hoist set up in the garage to pull this bed off. 4 bolts down, 4 to go.

Story to my gauge.... it worked great, one day it completely stopped so i bought a new sender and put it in. Put it all back together, still no reading.... sitting in the truck wondering why, when i flip the selector and boom!!! Works. So after all the original was fine but my switch was flipped to the side that dont work. Felt like such a fookin retard! Also every since it doesnt take gas correctly.

Guess I'm glad I only have one tank. And why does it not take gas after the 'fix'?

Lol... that's terrible.
My rh side never worked. I was messing with the switch one day (and put it back to lh) but didn't realize it wasn't completely switched.
No start.
It wasn't until the next that I realized it.
Doh.

It does.... just not properly. Now the nozzle has to go in sideways and it gets to full and pukes out the filler when it kicks off instead of slowing then kicking off

The po of the truck told me rh dont work. He told his wife this but she put gas in it anyway.... so then he took off the filler hose lol so i have the tank with no filler and a bad switch valve.

Think the long beds got the 20 gal tanks

I thought the 20 gallon ones were a special order. My old 78 K10 long bed and my 77 K20 long bed both have dual 16s. My dad's 79 K15 long bed has dual 16s also.

Or maybe it is a year thing... maybe in the 80's things changed?

That's even more interesting, because according to most everyone else, you and I are most definitely in the minority.

I had a '79 k10 in high school, long bed fleetside. Single 16 gal tank. I always figured that the 16 was the standard tank and the 20 was the upgrade. What was odd, was the truck wasn't exactly a base model, it was a Cheyenne package, with the full interior and full sport gauges. I guess they just didn't feel they needed the extra four gallon capacity.

Another 16er, eh? Interesting.
And I wondered the same thing about it possibly being an upgrade, but like I said.....mine's a Silverado with ac, power w/l, locking diff, cargo light, running boards, upgraded stereo, etc. I dont know why they'd draw the line on fuel tanks?
Because if it was a single option, it seems most were ordered w/ 20s.

Now that I think about it, is the cargo light standard?
I never noticed it on other trucks I've driven, but mine has a slider switch above the driver's head to turn on the cargo/bed light. Kinda neat.

The 3 trucks I mentioned didn't have cargo lights.

I guess you guys missed the rare and collectable thread. Every piece of these trucks was an option. Cargo light, extra. Quad shocks, extra, bumpers,.. had to spec those too.

FWIW, my '85 fleetside has 20 gal tanks. As far as I know, at least at that time, the "upgrade" was dual tanks.
