So Im thinking pretty seriously about trying to find a stepside bed for my truck to swap over from fleetside. I just wondered if there are any differences through the years that I should be aware of on the stepside bed designs etc? My truck is an 86 so Id like to find a "matching" bed for it that looks appropriate.

Fuel caps and round taillights on the early beds.

Fuel doors and rectangular taillights on the later beds.

Other than that, I can't think of any other differences, perhaps someone else will..

And besides the fenders and lights, the bed itself and tailgate is the same back to '55. The rear bumper is the same back to '67.

If memory serves and it may not be correct but I believe some of the newer year stepside beds did away with the wood and had a metal bed floor, not 100% on that but I had seen one with a metal bed floor, just not sure it was modified to be metal or like that from factory

They are wood until the '88-up bodystyle.

Even in 1988-91 on the squares (yes, you could special order a longbed stepside in those years.) they were still wood.
